In celebration of Canadian Multiculturalism Day! The Lion Dance, part of Chinese culture, delights young and old from many cultures! In Canada and around the world, practitioners of traditional Chinese martial arts preserve this centuries-old art form as part of their love and commitment to the teachings passed down for generations. The performance of the Lion Dance is a welcome addition to multicultural celebrations and special events. It's beauty and meaning easily transce...nd culture and generation. Formed on Kung Fu skills and theories, it takes lots of practice to become an accomplished dancer. Along with personal refinement of skills and the following of the martial code of ethics, teamwork and cooperation are essential. Some teams focus on sport and athleticism, which may include competition and highly stylized routines. Others emphasize the dance's entertainment value and present varieties of choreographed and ad-lib routines with symbolic story lines. Deeper studies delve into ancient philosophies, folk traditions & customs, the study of traditional medicine, astrology, feng shui and so on, to grasp the complex belief system of the Lion as a medium to influence positive change. Here in Regina, our student body is comprised of people from more than forty different cultures and backgrounds! No matter who we are or where we're from, we can learn a lot from one another.
