Meet Dustin, our Brewery Assistant! He works hard on the daily in our brewery, and always does so with a smile on his face. He’s the first to break out in a song and/or dance, and also the first to lend a hand whenever it’s needed. He’s an awesome addition to our team, and makes work fun every day! Hailing from BC, Dustin was a winemaker in his past career so he knows his way around a cellar! He’s enjoying learning all about the beer biz, and we’re enjoying working with him!

Part 2: Eight bells history. In 1920 Gillette & Johnston recast the 13 chime bells and sent these new bells to Halifax via ship, replacing the originals. A quick inspection of the bells reveals the bell maker, the date of the re-casting (1920), the bell number, and the pitch. Carillon chime bells consist of cast bronze, cup-shaped bells, which are played serially to produce a melody, or together to play a chord. They can vary in number from under 10 to over 50 bells. ...They are generally played on a keyboard pedal by a ‘Carillonneur.’ St. John’s was 1 of only 2 churches in Halifax to have Carillon chime bells. There were 13 bells within the tower, the heaviest bell with the pitch of F. St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica, Halifax, has 11 chime bells, the heaviest bell also with the pitch of F. These bells are registered along with 722 known North American chime bells and are listed within the registry in the Tower Bells Registry (www.towerbells.org). Each set of registered bells differ in number of bells, pitches and year of casting. The bells of St. John’s still rank as #187 of 722.

Our infamous brewery duo ringing the bell to signify something special. Eight bells to be exact. That’s right, folks, our Eight Bells Belgo Pale Ale is back! Brewed with love, from us to you. You might not know the story of the name behind the beer. It’s steeped in history. Over the next few days, we will tell the story. To start: The bells originally graced the bell tower of St. John’s Presbyterian Church (later St. John’s United) at the corner of Windsor and Willow stree...ts in Halifax. They resided there for 99 years. Construction of St. John’s began in 1914 and was completed in 1917. In 1917, 13 Carillon chime bells, cast at the famous Croydon England bell foundry Gillette & Johnston, were installed in the bell tower. On the morning of 6 December 1917 the SS Mont-Blanc, a French cargo ship laden with high explosives, collided with the Norwegian vessel SS Imo in the Narrows, a strait connecting the upper Halifax Harbour to Bedford Basin. Famously known as the ‘Halifax Explosion’, this even led to an enormous loss of life and destruction in Halifax, particularly on the north side of the Halifax peninsula. This event also resulted in the loss of the original 13 chime bells as they were all cracked and damaged. Never being able to be played again, they were removed and sold as scrap metal. Stay tuned tmw for more!
Don’t forget! This Wednesday! Willie Stratton! 8-10pm! No cover! https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=6zkZOlJ_ka0

Did you know? The architect , Andrew Cobb, who designed the beautiful building #churchbrewingco is housed in, is also the same architect that built The Dingle - a well loved Halifax tower that is often captured on camera and canvas. It’s a Halifax staple! Just a little bit of history trivia for your Sunday evening. Cheers
