Canadian Intervention and Assistance Dogs

Good morning. In light of the recent release of the article by the CBC, we at CIAD would like to acknowledge that the decision to remove Archie the service dog from our client's home was not made lightly. Service dogs are more than just one-size, fits all therapy tools.... They are not a filled prescription, they are living animals. As such, placing or keeping an animal in a home where he is neither successfully serving his purpose as a support dog nor is he having his needs met as an energetic animal, is not a conducive environment for improved mental health for anyone involved. As a nonprofit whose mission is to help those living with PTSD by pairing them with the best dog for their symptoms, lifestyle, and conditions, our intention was neither to make worse nor ignore the outcome of removing the animal from the home. We are not ignoring it now. Rather, we are doing our best to mitigate any concerns and communicate best we can on best practices moving forward not just for Debbie, but also for Archie, and for our future dogs and clients.
