I’m honoured to have had her part of my life these past months...learning much from her beyond her intelligence and beauty...and bravery moving halfway around the world, by herself, to learn and grow in our culture...how many of us would be so brave to reciprocate and move to her home country?? Please, take a minute or two to digest this reality: 400 years ago white people brought black people over here and enslaved them. And sold them. And treated them as less than human. For 250 years. While black men built the country under white laws and its systems of government. While 10, 15 generations of white families got to grow and flourish and make choices that could make their lives better. And then 150 years ago white people "freed" black people from slavery. But then ...angry white people created laws that made it impossible for them to vote. Or to own land. Or to have the same rights as white people. And even erected monuments glorifying people who actively had fought to keep them enslaved. All while another 5, 10 generations of white families got to grow and accumulate wealth and gain land and get an education. And then 60 years ago we made it "legal" for black people to vote, and to be "free" from discrimination. But angry white people still fought to keep schools segregated. And closed off neighborhoods to white people only. And made it harder for black people to get bank loans, or get quality education or health care, or to (gasp) marry a white person. All while another 2-3 generations of white families got to grow and pass their wealth down to their children and their children's children. And then we entered an age where we had the technology to make PUBLIC the things that were already happening in private-- the beatings, the stop and frisk laws, the unequal distribution of justice, the police brutality (police began in America as slave patrols designed to catch runaway slaves). And only now, after 400+ years and 20+ generations of a white head start, are we STARTING to truly have a dialog about what it means to be black. White privilege doesn't mean you haven't suffered or fought or worked hard. It doesn't mean white people are responsible for the sins of our ancestors. It doesn’t mean you can’t be proud of who you are. It DOES mean that we need to acknowledge that the system our ancestors created is built FOR white people. It DOES mean that we aren't disadvantaged because of the color of our skin and it DOES mean that we owe it to our neighbors-- of all colors-- to acknowledge that and work to make our world more equitable. Huge debt of gratitude to Angelique Reddy-Kalala for all... she is doing during this pandemic on top of her important work all year long. Myriam Mekni and her Team at MAGMA are also to be commented too! Thanks to Jonna Brewer, a Trailblazer at our recent International Women’s Day Celebration, and well known morning host on CBC Radio to shedding light on this important topic. Will share that Kenza wrote her last exam on Monday and learned that she graduates with a 90+ average. She accepted a position with Scotiabank and now is awaiting her start day. She truly is a remarkable young woman. Greater Moncton along with our Province and Country are doing incredible things for so many...extremely proud to live here. #togetherweshine #buildbackbetter #eachforequal

UPDATE: had 2 calls with Kenza and Asfi...sent an email to all 3 levels of government asking for insights and direction. Dawn Arnold responded and brought Angelique Reddy-Kalala and Serge Zably into the mix. Angelique had answers/direction with a number of places/contacts who have been focused on our international students and immigrants. MAGMA are playing a pivotal role too. Many of you have offered assistance and we appreciate that...Kenza will be doing more investigatin...g and letting us know how we can respond to other needs. Grateful how our community has rallied with support for so many different groups. Thanks to each of you...you’ve given Kenza Bennouna some peace of mind and confirmation that her choice of making Greater Moncton her home was the right one WOW...after meeting Kenza in the fall...I was in such awe of her personality, knowledge, passion, drive and desire to make NB her home after her schooling was to end in June. Now, I’m more than ever totally impressed given her honesty and transparency. So...I know what I’m doing tomorrow...finding ways to help her and her fellow students feel safe and secure while dealing with all their stresses thousands of miles from home... Many of you may have met her at our International Women’s Day celebrations March 11...before our world turned upside down... Looking on the *bright* side : How I'm feeling in my HeadSpace today Think about it? ... TRAFFIC is gone. GAS is affordable. BILLS extended. KIDS are at home with their FAMILIES. PARENTS are home taking care of their CHILDREN. FAST FOOD replaced by HOME COOKED MEALS. Hectic SCHEDULES replaced by NAPS, REST, and RELAXATION. The AIR seems CLEANER. The WORLD quieter. PEOPLE are conscious about HYGIENE and HEALTH. MONEY doesn't seem to make the WORLD GO ROUND anymore. DOCTORS AND NURSES are being praised and recognized instead of athletes and celebrities And WE now have TIME, finally, to STOP and SMELL the ROSES. ~The positive side above all!!!~ #copyandpaste

What if... we subscribe to the philosophy that life is always working out for us, that there is an intelligence far greater than humans at work... That all is interconnected.... What if... this corona virus is here to help us? To reset. To remember. What is truly important. Reconnecting with family and community. Reducing travel so that the environment, the skies, the air, our lungs all get a break. Parts of China are seeing blue sky and clouds for the first time in forever with the factories being shut down. Working from home rather than commuting to work (less pollution, more personal time). Reconnecting with family as there is more time at home. An invitation to turn inwards -- a deep meditation -- rather than the usual extroverted going out to self-soothe. To reconnect with self -- what is really important to me? A reset economically. The working poor. The lack of healthcare access for over 30 million in the US. The need for paid sick leave. How hard does one need to work to be able to live, to have a life outside of work? And, washing our hands -- how did that become a "new" thing that we needed to remember. But, yes, we did. The presence of Grace for all. There is a shift underway in our society -- what if it is one that is favorable for us? What if this virus is an ally in our evolution? In our remembrance of what it means to be connected, humane, living a simpler life, to be less impactful/ more kind to our environment. An offering from my heart this morning. Offered as another perspective. Another way of relating to this virus, this unfolding, this evolution. It was time for a change, we all knew that. And, change has arrived. What if... - Gutpreet Gill

Like most women of my age, we grew up with a grandmother and mom who were very traditional, so it wasn't easy or obvious for me when I started my career in a male dominated world. I then had two beautiful daughters - and a beautiful granddaughter, followed by another - and I wanted to raise them to be strong, independent women. And they are. They're real go-getters, self-starters, with incredible initiative. And my hope for them, and for all of you, is that you have a community of women - in your personal and professional lives - that you can count on, and phenomenal men who will stand up alongside you. I remember watching the movie Hidden Figures. So much resonated with me and the journey I travelled as a woman...albeit not as bad for me...I could really empathize for Katherine Johnson and her fellow female colleagues. Katherine Johnson passed away this week, but she leaves a strong legacy and inspiration behind. She was one of NASA's "human computers," a group of female mathematicians who calculated critical equations for rocket design, launch trajectories, and more. She... calculated by hand the flight trajectories for a number of historic missions, while fighting against gender and racial barriers. A true legend. https://tinyurl.com/rthqz2n
