Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a condition that causes pain, numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness in your fingers and hand due to compression of the median nerve. Carpal tunnel is the area in your wrist (on the palm side of your hand) where the median nerve enters into the hand. The carpal tunnel is made of ligaments and helps connect the small bones of your wrist. The median nerve travels the length of your arm, through the tunnel, into the palm of your hand, providing m...ovement and feeling to the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and segment of the ring finger. Muscle tendons of the fingers also pass through this narrow space and can become irritated and inflamed causing the compression. Symptoms usually appear at night, starting gradually with numbness or tingling in the fingers. Swelling, warmth, inflammation and tenderness may also be present. Sharp, shooting, and stabbing pains can cause lack of dexterity, reduce flexibility and decrease strength - especially when grasping or pinching. The dominant hand is generally first to be affected and symptoms are typically also more intense. Advanced stages can produce pain into the shoulder while others may experience loss of sensation making it difficult to distinguish between hot and cold touch. CTS can be caused by awkward, repetitive hand and wrist motions. Using hand tools that vibrate can also be contributing factors. The carpal tunnel in woman are generally smaller, and as a result, are three times more likely to develop CTS. Individuals with underlying conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, gout, under-active thyroid, pregnancy and menopause are commonly more susceptible to developing CTS. To relieve symptoms of CTS refrain from activities that provoke or aggravate the injury; avoid repetitive movements; take frequent breaks from tasks; apply cold pack to reduce inflammation; wear a wrist splint (usually worn at night to prevent flexing of the wrist or build-up of fluids); engage in specific stretches and exercises to improve strength and flexibility; ensure your work station and tools are ergonomically correct. CTS can be temporary or may progress. Seeking treatment at the onset of symptoms can help prevent permanent nerve damage, loss of muscle function, or deformity. Pathological tests can be performed during your therapeutic massage therapy session to determine the presence of CTS. Specific massage therapy techniques can relieve symptoms associated with this condition, and in some cases - reverse it. Targeted stretches, exercises and home-care recommendations will help you proactively reduce pain and promote gradual, safe healing.
