Cinevolution Media Arts 01.04.2021

Each year, through the Featured Artist Program, Cinevolution features an artist whose practice has uniquely impacted the media art landscape in Canada. Past Featured Artists have included Paul Wong, Margaret Dragu, Dana Claxton, Vjeko Sager, Sammy Chien, Cindy Mochizuki, Lisa Birke and Terrance Houle, and Nicole Dextras. This year, we are excited to celebrate critically acclaimed artists Nancy Lee and Kiran Bhumber, and their first solo exhibition UNION, presented in part...nership with the Richmond Art Gallery. Inspired by the artists' creative inquiry and the themes of their exhibition, this year's Digital Canrival - Z - focuses on artworks that explore alternative conceptions of the relationship between bodies, gestures, culture and society. Gender, sexuality and the body have long been battlegrounds through which power and control are exercised and social inequalities enforced. Through Z, we seek to present a series of works and events that will make visible alternative ways of occupying and performing the body, past, present, and future. Z references the gender-neutral pronoun ‘zie,’ the emergent generation-Z, and the possibilities for moving beyond the XX/XY binary. Stayed tuned for more details! - Nancy Lee & Kiran Bhumber, UNION, video still. Image courtesy of the artists. In 20XX, a security specialist named Kawabi wants what everyone wants: to leave behind the scars of sickness, hunger, and war and lead a new life in a new body. She joins The Grove, an idealistic start-up with a fleet of bioengineered and shareable bodies. But when a hostile entity hacks The Grove’s network, colonizing the minds and bodies of its inhabitants, Kawabi must rescue her new home by reckoning with a ghost of the past. A new work of science-fiction created by Vanc...ouver-based interdisciplinary performance collective A Wake of Vultures, led by Siminovitch Prize Protégé Conor Wylie. Originally planned as a live theatre performance, K BODY AND MIND has been re-envisioned as an episodic miniseries for viewing at home. Blending overloaded 90s anime and cyberpunk aesthetics with an off-kilter and mesmerizing minimalist performance style, K BODY AND MIND is an impossible sci-fi epic performed by two bodies in an abandoned 100-year-old theatre. Featuring intricately patterned lights, sound, and choreography, you can watch all three episodes on-demand in our special, limited online release from March 6-14, 2021. RSVP to K BODY AND MIND with the link below

"I began to scan, alter and reverse my drawings, creating exploding / flowering hair piks...this gesture also reflected a personal sense that the world is on fire." OCTOBER 22 - OCTOBER 28 In only 2 days we launch our exhibition of Deanne Achong's PANDEMIK PIKS an interactive series of drawings available in the Digital Shift Gallery from October 22 onwards: https://digitalshift.imaa.ca/space/art-gallery/... This project was originally conceived on Instagram loosely around the idea of hair. Midway through the project, when the deaths of Breonna Taylor and countless others filled the news, the artist’s feed was populated with black squares. In response to these ambiguous squares the artist scanned, altered and reversed the drawings, creating exploding and flowering hair piks. The series now reflects her thoughts on the world being on fire. [Image courtesy of the artist]
