It’s been a great fall /early winter for extended grazing. Today, Dec 28/20, -14C (-23C wind chill) still grazing stock pile forage. Allowed access to barley straw. Expect to be bale grazing by mid Jan ‘21 if weather holds steady. Here’s some calves learning from momma what it takes to earn their keep.

Here’s some great reading to help shorten the long winter . If you’ve already read a number of these let me know which ones you enjoyed most. For the Love Soil - (Nicole Masters) and Dirt to Soil- (Gabe Brown) are two of my favourites... it’s really hard to pick just one!... https://regenfarming.news//10-must-read-books-for-regenera

Our Dying Soils are connected to every sphere of society. Our Soils worldwide have become degenerated to the point where FAO estimates that we have 60 crop year...s left after which regeneration will no longer be possible. In my view 60 years is an extremely optimistic estimate. The problem is that the degeneration process is excelled or exacerbated by the destructive process of tilling, monocropping, insecticide, fungicide, herbicide, nematicide and fertilizer over application because normal rates no longer work, and the soil becomes addictive to these practices and chemicals. Fallowing of the land for long periods when it is not covered with at least a crop adds to the devastation. The above problem is not taken seriously enough by authorities and governments around the world. Everybody talks about it but end up kicking the can down the road. This problem of soil degradation is a bigger problem than we care to understand. It is connected to all spheres of normal life that is accepted as granted by most citizens. Like for instance the following issues which are all connected to the soil and the health state thereof which is in a serious state of decline affecting all these issues in a negative manner. o Availability of enough food. o That the provided food is of good nutritious value. o Human health issues. o Global warming and climate change. o Availability of clean and healthy water. o Pollution of water ways, rivers, and lakes. The irony here is that these destructive farming practices mostly adopted in growing commodity crops are in most instances not profitable. Incomes from all the commodity crops are on the decline while input costs to are on the rise. Why are Farmers pursuing non profitable crop production using soil destructive practices? It does not make sense. The solution with regenerative agriculture is at hand and proven to be much more profitable but implementation is slow. The cropping systems causing the problems are less profitable than the cropping systems that heal, regenerate, and provide healthy food but remain the dominant way of doing things. Why is this? This post is by no means meant to criticize but to state the facts and pose the question. See more

Makes a guy proud when the likes of Johann Zietsman is using pictures of your cattle in a presentation.
