The Citadel’s Residency Program was designed to extend support beyond presentation and foster creative practice through the allocation of space, time and production and administration resources for artists within the dance community. One of the 2020/21 season’s Creative Incubator artists, Syreeta Hector, has been developing her Dora-nominated solo, Black Ballerina into a full length work. The Citadel is the best! They supported me when Black Ballerina was a seed of an idea, ...and now they are are here to help me make this piece into my first full length work. A few questions answered by Syreeta Hector, upcoming Citadel LIVE and Creative Incubator Pilot Project artist Why did you want to return to this work and make it into a full-length solo? Following the SummerWorks Festival and Citadel Dance Mix performances in 2019, I knew that there was more that needed to be explored in Black Ballerina land. At that time, I still had seeds for ideas that were just beginning to be developed and danced. Now, this piece and the movement within ...the work is even more relevant. People are starting to listen. What is most exciting about creating a livestream? I feel so fortunate to be able to continue working at this time and especially with such a great team of people. The most exciting thing is having the opportunity to share the work with so many people in so many places. Also, my family is in North Carolina, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. They often don’t get to see me perform as much as they would like to. This is a great opportunity to share the work on a national level. Our relationship with Black Ballerina, created and performed by Syreeta Hector, began over a year ago when the work was featured in Citadel Dance Mix 2019. Syreeta has been expanding and reworking the piece through various residencies with Canadian Stage, The Citadel and Kaaitheater in Brussels, Belgium. Introducing Citadel LIVE! Citadel LIVE is Citadel + Compagnie’s new feature livestream series. Building on the momentum of Night Shift 2020, the series rises above the limitations imposed by the pandemic to allow live dance performance to shine in the digital space.... Directed by Oscar-nominated Barbara Willis Sweete former livestream director at New York’s Metropolitan Opera the series employs experts in the field of performing arts filmmaking to bring the ephemeral nature of dance to audiences through the screen. Today we are thrilled to announce the first presentation in the Citadel LIVE series: Syreeta Hector’s Black Ballerina premiering Friday November 27 at 7pm EST. Live performance has been forever impacted by the pandemic.
