CityHive 21.12.2020

It's our first day at work in 2021, but we're going to start off this year by continuing to reflect on all that we learned in 2020! Highlight 3 from our 2020 Vision series is our ongoing JEDDI (justice, equity, diversity, decolonization, and inclusion) transformation. We were so lucky to learn with and from incredible leaders, including folks at Mi tel'nexw Leadership Society, Cicely Blain Consulting and League of Innovators, and much of the work recognized here will continue into the new year. As mentioned, we'll be providing an accountability update this monthuntil then, you can revisit our statement on anti-Black racism and commitment to anti-racism here: https://cityhive.ca/about-us/commitment-to-anti-racism/

Highlight 4 in our 2020 Vision series is launching our alumni support network, Project Hub! We've been working to build out such a program for years, and found a natural partner in RADIUS. So far, we've hosted 5 workshop sessions on community, market research, grant writing, project partnership development and equity centred design. We can't wait to continue supporting our alumni in building out transformational ideas for better communities and cities.

Highlight 5 is Distant, Not Disengaged! This is one of those special initiatives that only happened because of the pandemic. The event series is a collaboration with SFU Public Square and SFU Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue that brought so much joy and community to us in times of uncertainty. It was never about numbers, but nonetheless we're proud to have hosted 17 events throughout 2020 and brought together 2,500 guests.

As a youth-led and serving organization, we're often asked by other individuals and organizations what young folks think about a particular issue. Youth are not a monolithin fact, who gets considered "youth" is ever-changingbut we often do see overlapping visions for the future in the programs we run. We're pulling together a special monthly newsletter that focuses on how young folks define and imagine resilient communities, and we want to include as many perspectives as po...ssible! Comment below or send us a message. Your contribution in the newsletter will be anonymous. Take care of yourselves, The CityHive team

Today is #OrangeShirtDay. As a team of settlers working in the realms of civic engagement and city building, we are grateful for the Indigenous elders and youth modelling decolonial approaches to this historically harmful work. We often start presentations by acknowledging that nothing about our built environment was inevitablesimilarly, residential schools were actively planned and maintained by white Canadian officials and still have enormous impact on the lives of Indigenous communities. In fact, one of our team members was born in 1996: the year the last Canadian residential school closed. We seek to keep learning and unlearning, and to follow the lead of our host Nations in co-creating a future that is just and equitable. Learn the story of Orange Shirt Day here: https://www.orangeshirtday.org/phyllis-story.html
