WildSafeBC community coordinator Danica Roussy asks residents of Cranbrook and Kimberley to take a proactive approach in deterring bears this season. Although there is a lot of talk about bears and garbage, it is important for people to realize how much of an issue fruit trees can be if they are not cared for with wildlife in mind. Once a bear gets a reward from a fruit tree, they will return to the tree again and again. Although fruit might seem like a natural food source for these bears, fruit in our backyards leads to habituation of wildlife - something that is dangerous and cannot be undone. Find out how you can manage your fruit trees here: https://kimberley.ca/news/manage-your-fruit-trees

Why does the City turn off the taps at the Splash Park and Platzl Fountain at 4:30 p.m.? The short answerto keep you safe! The long answerCity staff have carefully planned re-opening of City parks and facilities in order to help flatten the COVID-19 curve. It has been proven that UV rays from the sun will sanitize, or deactivate viruses (including SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19), on surfaces. Most importantly, those surfaces need to be dry and the sun needs time to work. A 4:30 p....m. close time allows staff to shut off the water, allows surfaces to dry, and allows the sun to do its job and deactivate any viruses so that facilities are ready for play the next day. This is similar to why Rotary Park washrooms close at 4:30 p.m. In order to keep you and City staff safe, washroom cleaner needs time to work. At 4:30 p.m., City staff enter the washrooms and spray a thick layer of disinfectant on everything. They then activate air exchangers to remove any airborne viruses. They close and lock the door to let the disinfectant do its job, returning in the morning to wipe everything down. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause however, we have carefully planned a coordinated re-opening of the facilities at Rotary Park in order to limit the spread of COVID-19 in our community. We will continue to monitor the situation going forward and will be sure to post any changes to the Splash Park and Platzl Fountain operating hours on the City website at www.kimberley.ca and on our social media accounts. Thank you for your patience. If youd like more information, please email [email protected].

City of Kimberley 25.08.2019

Provincial Fire Fighters are working to extinguish a small 0.5-hectare fire west of the City of Kimberley. The fire, which began on Sunday, August 2, is believed to have been caused by lightning. Though overnight wind conditions were high, the fire has not changed in size. The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) has deemed the fire a top priority. Weather conditions are favourable and BCWS ground crews are working on gaining access to the fire as it is located near the top of a mounta...in. Air tankers and bucket helicopters will be skimming on St. Marys Lake today so please use caution on the lake. The City of Kimberley Emergency Operations Centre has been activated at Level 1. We will continue to provide updates as they become available. The public can also watch for updates on the provinces B.C. Wildfire Dashboard found here: https://bit.ly/3go2XXi.

As temperatures rise, lets remember optimal watering times. Residents can water between 4:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Watering during extreme temperatures is less efficient and wasteful as water will evaporate before reaching plant roots. Watering your lawn daily will create a shallow root system, which dries out fast and weakens your lawn. Watering every other day, even numbered addresses on even numbered days and odd numbered addresses on odd numbered days, will help strengthen your lawn. Thanks, Kimberley!
