As we wait for pending approval, we can start making small changes now: Try different bags, boxes or totes & find a suitable replacement for plastic grocery bags Store re-usable bags in your car, purse or jacket pockets (along with your mask) to get into the habit of always having one handy! If you own a business, hold off ordering large quantities of branded plastic bags ...& perhaps research some other cost effective options to switch to To learn more about reducing single use bags in Nanaimo visit http://ow.ly/FC9e50DeL1V

Happy New Year, Nanaimo, from Councillor Sheryl Armstrong.
In 2019, a climate emergency was declared to bring a new focus to energy and emissions management. The harbour and estuaries, islands, lakes, forests, hills and watercourses that make our community attractive also play key roles in making our City less vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The current Official Community Plan (OCP) guides us to plan our community to protect and enhance a sustainable environment. Have your say! http://ow.ly/dr3F50CcAZY

As a Nanaimo resident, we know you take care to reduce garbage in your Black Cart, properly sort organics and recycle right. You practice the 3Rs - Reduce, Reuse & Recycle - and when you're in doubt, you check it out on the What Goes Where recycling directory. We THANK YOU for your efforts to keep us on the path to Zero Waste, and want you to know your time and care is worth it! Here’s the basics of what happens your cart contents: Black Cart Garbage is hauled to the Re...gional Landfill on Cedar Road, where it’s compacted and eventually covered. Green Cart Organics are delivered to a facility in Duke Point, where non-compostables are screened out, then it’s processed indoors to turn from compostables to soil. Blue Cart Recyclables are brought to a receiving facility in south Nanaimo to go through the first round of sorting. After that, recyclables are sent to a material recovery facility in the lower mainland, where it’s sorted again, then sent to the following locations for processing: o Hard plastic packaging a plastics recycling facility in the lower mainland o Metal containers facilities in BC, Ontario and the United States o Paper and cardboard end-markets overseas, in the United States, or in BC Want to find out more? A Special Council meeting takes place today at 1pm. Watch the livestream or view the agenda online at http://ow.ly/UWm050CLf8E
It's usually pretty frustrating when things rip, tear, break or breakdown, but before you look at buying a replacement, consider the value of repairing and continuing to reuse the item or device. If you still decide on replacing it, but someone else may find value in fixing it and using it, pass it forward! http://ow.ly/PHoE50BXOtG
Sometimes referred to as collaborative consumption, access over ownership is the idea that resources can be shared or rented rather than owned. The internet continues to bring more people together with similar interests, and we're seeing car and bike sharing programs and even content sharing services such as Netflix on the rise. Speaking of which, if you have a shelf full of now dusty DVDs and Bluray movies, consider passing them forward or selling them in a Marketplace or used listing.
Did you know 67% of Nanaimo’s businesses are locally owned and operated? They are the foundation of our community and we celebrate them this week during small business week October 18-24, 2020. They provide well paying, local jobs, new vibrancy & uniqueness throughout our community. During COVID-19, they’ve had to persevere and innovate like never before. You can also show support by taking 10 min to fill out the REIMAGINE NANAIMO "How We Work" survey sharing your ideas for enhancing economic development http://ow.ly/7Gtz50BYYMR

Make a list. Check it twice! Over-buying is easy, but try planning out your meals ahead of time so that you only purchase what you need when you cruise the grocery store aisles, especially when it comes to perishables. http://ow.ly/5N9l50BWvVp
