The City would like to remind residents that we have active bears all year-round. Garbage is the number one attractant for bears in our community. Follow these simple steps to help protect your family and neighbours. Taking this action will also ensure the well-being of our valley’s black bears: Do not put garbage curb-side until morning of pick up. Properly secure your garbage either keep it indoors until pick-up or outdoors locked with animal resistant hardware.... Keep your garbage in a bear-proof enclosure. Remove rotting and fallen fruit from the ground and clean up Halloween pumpkins from your property. The City’s Public Works Department is happy to modify your garbage bin to include animal resistant hardware, free of charge. Call 250.720.2840. Tsunami Warning System Test Today at 1 p.m. Surviving a disaster is everyone’s business, so we want to make sure you are informed and prepared. At 1 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month, the City of Port Alberni Fire Department tests its Tsunami Warning System. Today at 1 p.m. you’ll hear the sound of a didgeridoo, our test sound, echo through the valley for a few minutes. THIS IS JUST A TEST.... The tsunami warning system in Port Alberni consists of four towers positioned at strategic locations at the edge of the tsunami inundation zone. The system is tested silently every Monday and audibly on the first Wednesday every month at 1:00 p.m. In the event of a real tsunami warning, a siren will sound followed by directions to go immediately to higher ground. For more information on the tsunami warning system, please contact the Port Alberni Fire Department at 250-724-1351. Did You Know? -------------------- All Saints Church was built in 1898. The lumber was supplied by George Bird, the owner and operator of a sawmill at the foot of Argyle Street. George Bird was also the first man to cycle across Vancouver Island. The building was constructed by George Forrest, a carpenter and contractor. George Forrest built many of the local houses as well as having the Pachena lighthouse built after the wreck of the Valencia. The church still stands at the... corner of Gertrude Street and Southgate Street. Today (2020) it is Yates Funeral Home. The first photo is how the church looked in circa 1905. The second photo is how the church looked in 1975. Note the rectory is no longer there. These photos are some of the more than 24,000 photos in the museums collection. FREE YARDWASTE CURBSIDE PICKUP! Earlier this year, funded by a FireSmart BC grant from the Union of BC Municipalities, Alberni Valley residents were encouraged ...to FireSmart their homes and drop off their yard waste at a number of locations. While that event was a great success it was recognized that not everyone who may have yard waste also has the ability to transport it off their property. In response to this the Alberni Valley Emergency Program is offering free residential yardwaste curbside pickup. To request curbside pick-up of your yardwaste please call (250) 720-2702 and a contractor will schedule a time to pickup the materials. Allowed: -Small trees, branches (up to 4" diameter) -Two piles per property -Piles neatly stacked at roadside with butt ends facing same direction -Max pile size (8x8x5 high) -Waving happily at the person picking up the yardwaste Not allowed: -Construction material, garbage, organics -Invasive species (including blackberry vines), grass clippings, leaves, soft plant materials -Piles with gravel, dirt, or roots covered in dirt -Bear hugs (Dr. Bonnie Henry would not approve)
