Kick off the New Year with a holiday cleanup. We’d like to remind everyone who chose a fresh tree this year to remove it from your home promptly after Christmas celebrations are over, as dried-out trees are a fire danger. Hint: take it to the Christmas Tree Chipping for Charity event, hosted by the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine and the City of Terrace. It’s on today (January 2) through Monday, January 4, at the Thornhill Transfer Station. Stop by with a cash donation ...for our zero-contact donation box and your tree (with all lights and ornaments removed) between 12 noon and 5 pm to turn your tree into compost while also helping our local food banks. Win-win-win! Event details: https://www.terrace.ca//ca/christmas-tree-chipping-charity More holiday tips: https://www.terrace.ca/holiday-safety

BC Assessment Notices are delivered to homes in the first few weeks of January, so you’ve probably received yours by now. This year, the average residential increase in Terrace was 1%. If you do not agree with your assessment, the deadline to appeal is January 31, and you would do this through BC Assessment (not through the City of Terrace). How does your property assessment relate to your municipal property taxes? Take a look on our website to learn more: https://www.terrace.ca/property-assessments

By now, the 2-metre physical distancing recommendation is ingrained in our brains. But did you know our refuse carts also like a little bit of space between them? Please remember the 1-metre rule: Place your carts at least 1 metre (or 3 feet) away from parked cars, trees, or other obstructions like a hydro box, as well as 1 metre away from other carts. The mechanical arm on the truck needs that space all around a cart in order to successfullyand safelypick it up (and yesso...metimes they do fall over when the arm puts them down!). Remember to also position your carts with the arrows pointing to the centre of the road. *Pro tip: You use these carts each week and may not think about them muchbut these instructions are actually on the lid of each one To learn more about garbage, recycling, and organics pickup in the City of Terrace, please visit https://www.terrace.ca/refuse Click on the NEW 2021 Collection Schedule for more on spacing your carts and other helpful information: https://www.terrace.ca//2021-refuse-collection-schedule.pdf #CurbsideCollectionTip

Our January fitness schedule is a little slimmer under the latest Provincial Health Officer orders, but we still have several options to help you get off to a healthy start in 2021! Remember, you must pre-register: no drop-ins are allowed. Registration opens 7 days before the first day of classes and closes the night before it starts (to register for a class that has already begun, please call us). Everyone will be required to register for the full month of classes in order to create a cohort and avoid one-off attendees. There’s still time to register for Yoga with Barb, which starts tomorrow! Help us keep our storm drains free of contaminants! Over the last several months, City of Terrace staff and the officers from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans have noted dead coho salmon fry in a small stream that originates at the junction of Graham Avenue and Eby Street. The stream flows into the Skeena River and provides important rearing habitat for juvenile salmon. Officers have been unable to determine the exact cause of the fish mortalities but suspect that... deleterious (harmful) substances are entering the city storm drainage infrastructure that empties into the stream. The City has started a storm drain marking program in the area. Storm drains that lead to this or other streams will be marked with a yellow fish. The storm drain marking initiatives goal is to increase awareness for local residents of the sensitivity of fish and their habitats and to reduce or stop harmful substances from entering the waterways. Our Public Works crews are marking drains as the weather and availability permits. If you have any information regarding the possible source of these fish kills, please call the Terrace office of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans at 250-615-5350 (MonFri, 8 am4 pm).

The proposed inland port and developments project in Terrace is a transload facility and mixed-use commercial and light industrial service centre proposed by NSD Development Corporation (Progressive Ventures). NSD applied to amend Official Community Plan (OCP) Bylaw No. 2142-2018 and Zoning Bylaw No. 2069-2014 for 4800 Keith Avenue and 4760 Keith Avenue, to allow for the construction and operation of this facility. The proposal requires amendments to Appendix ‘H’ (Keith Est...ate Neighborhood Concept Plan) of the Official Community Plan (OCP) Bylaw No. 2142-2018 to support limited heavy industrial uses on portions of the Keith Estates lands and to remove multi-family residential land uses for the Keith Estates lands. We are holding an Open House to give community residents and stakeholders the opportunity to comment on the Bylaw amendments prior to their consideration by Council. The Open House will be held Wednesday, November 25, 2020, at the Days Inn meeting room (4620 Lakelse Ave). It will run from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm and from 3:00 pm to 7:30 pm. An online Open House will also be available from Wednesday, November 18, to Wednesday, December 2, 2020. A Public Hearing will follow on Tuesday, December 8. Its National Forest Week, and for a forestry community like Terrace, its a reminder that a healthy forest can mean family-supporting incomes for forestry workers, opportunities for locally owned businesses, and economic development for local Indigenous communities. Here are just some of the forestry successes we can celebrate this week for National Forest Week: Economic success of local First Nations in the region: One highlight is the recent agreements being signed betwe...en Skeena Sawmills and Kalum Ventures and Kitselas Forestry LP. A resilient sector: Skeena Sawmills not only pushed through the recent closures/curtailments in the province, but actually looked to invest an additional $40 million, hire a second shift, and modernize their mill with advanced technology such as CT scanners for logs. Ecological stewardship: One highlight is the work being done to protect the Northern Interior Goshawk. Sector growth: We recently saw the first land-based helicopter logging program in 20 years. Strong support of the sector in the region and province: We are seeing lots of research and policy development that will help encourage local investment and job growth. A whistle or personal alarm to call for help. Written instructions for special medical or mobility equipment.... Extra eye glasses, hearing aids and hearing aid batteries. This year marks the 100th anniversary of National Forest Week, which recognizes Canadas forest heritage and the value of this renewable resource. Forests are vital to our economy, culture, traditions, and history. Everyone depends on forests in some waywhether for their livelihood, culture, recreation, or way of life. A healthy forest helps build a healthy futurethats why the City of Terrace and Terrace Community Forest aim to enhance our local trails, like the Howe Creek... trail system, where we work to improve trail quality, build coarse woody debris piles for wildlife, and increase bank stabilization to prevent erosion. Meanwhile, Terrace Community Forest manages a forest license on our behalf. By thinning out trees in these second-growth forests, biodiversity improves, and the revenue from this lumber helps support organizations in our community. Please do not strip bark from trees along our trails and in our parks. This is against the Parks and Public Spaces Bylaw and, more importantly, it will eventually kill the tree. Trees transport water through their bark and when a ring is removed like this, water will not be able to reach the trees branches. Trees with "girdled" bark removal will eventually die. Please help us keep our community's trees alive and well!

Its hard to think about skating when we (finally!) have some nice weather here in Terrace, but if youve been dreaming of getting back to the rink, good news! We are starting public skates next week. Top 5 things to know: 1 You MUST register for your skate (registration opens 7 days in advance and closes 1 day before the event). NO drop-ins are allowed.... 2 Public skates are Wednesdays (3:45-4:45 pm) and Saturdays (12:45-2:15 pm). 3 All skate sessions are $4 each. Sorry, no skate or helmet rentals are available. 4 One parent is allowed in the stands per child on the ice. No siblings are allowed in the stands unless they are also registered for the skate session. 5 Be sure to sit in your designated space in the bleachers to put on and take off your skates, or if you need a break. In addition, all COVID-19 health and safety protocols are in place to keep you safe. Please do not attend if you and/or your children are feeling unwell. Please be patient and kind to one another as we reopen for public skating! As noted, registration only opens 1 week in advance: Quicklink to register for Wed, Sept 16 (registration opens Sept 9; closes Sept 15): http://ow.ly/rec450Blqfi Quicklink to register for Sat, Sept 19 (registration opens Sept Sept 12; closes Sept 18): http://ow.ly/UZqs50BlqeZ Registration + information: terrace.ca/skate 250-615-3000 Hope to see you soon!

On Wednesday, September 9, at 8 am, a crew will be working on the east side of Ferry Island taking the mud off the trails. The area will be roped off and will remain closed until the work is complete, either later on Wednesday, or possibly on Thursday. Please stay out of roped off areas for your safety and join us on these trails another day. Thanks for your understanding!
