In anticipation of colder conditions over the coming weeks, the Whitehorse Fire Department is reminding residents about home safety during extreme cold weather. Conduct routine testing of your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and make sure they are properly functioning. Ensure that any heating appliance air intake or exhaust ports are clear of snow and ice.... In the event of a power outage, do not use outdoor barbeques or heating devices inside your home or garage. If you have an emergency gasoline-powered generator, keep it well away from doors and windows to prevent carbon monoxide from entering your home. Space heaters must be kept at least three-feet away from any combustible material and always plugged directly into electrical outlets do not use extension cords. Remember to never leave space heaters unattended or with unsupervised children or pets. Keep your home safe by having annual inspections of heating appliances prior to the winter season. A woodstove, even if only used for back-up heating, needs an annual inspection by a qualified technician. Be prepared for emergencies year round you must be able to sustain your household for a minimum of 72-hours without power or running water. For more information on keeping your home safe this winter, please contact the Whitehorse Fire Department at 867-668-2462.

Snow Removal January 18 to 24 Priority 1 and 2 roads in Riverdale, Whistle Bend, Downtown Keep at least 15 metres from crews and equipment. Watch for snow removal and advance warning signs. ... New snowfall or other unexpected delays may result in a street not being cleared of snow. Occasionally your street may be scheduled for clearing but it gets skipped. This usually happens when there are multiple vehicles parked on the street, slowing down progress clearing snow and ice. Crews rely on your support, and the support of your neighbours, to move your vehicles (and any obstacles) off the street so snow and ice can be cleared efficiently. We use a 4 level priority system for snow and ice control in the City. As long as it’s snowing, crews will be focused on snow and ice control on priority 1 and priority 2 roads. The City allows priority 3 and priority 4 roads to pack to a hardened snow surface until such time as the snow can be completely removed and hauled away. Learn more at whitehorse.ca/snowandice.

Our equipment can’t reach every street right after a snow event and these piles can pose a serious hazard to unsuspecting road users including cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists. Shovel neat, not into the street! See more

Workers have started to develop the Copper Haul Road Fuel Break. This project is a major part of the Whitehorse South Hazard Risk Reduction Project, which will... create stronger wildfire defenses south of the City of Whitehorse. It will reinforce the Copper Haul Road’s role as an existing natural break in the forest and will eventually extend to 100 metres on either side of the road. If you use the Copper Haul Road, you should know that this work will continue into early 2024 with work largely taking place through the fall and winter months. The government has been working closely with user groups to ensure that any interruptions to road or trail use will be shared with the community.
