Residents may have noticed some foam collecting in Shelly Creek. Although foam on small waterways can be caused by human pollution, it is more often due to natural causes. Organic matter such as branches, leaves and conifer needles breakdown and release organic compounds that act as surfactants reducing the surface tension of the water. With heavy rainfall and when water moves through rougher areas of the creek, air is introduced and the compounds which include fatty acids and oils create the foam.

As leaves start to fall please do not sweep or blow them onto the street. Leaf control is the responsibility of property owners. City street sweeping is intended to remove leaves which fall onto streets which block catch basins and cause safety hazards for cyclists and pedestrians. Do not rake or blow leaves from lawns onto the street in anticipation of the City’s sweeper truck. Blowing or raking leaves into the gutter is illegal and subject to a fine of $75 (Traffic Bylaw 1436).
