This is remarkable! Taken in 1946 from what would be about Queens Quay & York St today (more than a decade before the Gardiner Expressway), the Royal York Hotel (1929) and Union Station (1920) are clearly visible; Canada Life (1929) and Commerce Court (1930) are also easy to spot. Look how smoke stained the buildings were!... This came from City of Toronto Archives Twitter feed.

Our annual deep dive into Torontos colourful Irish History returns Saturday, March 9th. Fenians & Famine was the very first tour we offered in Toronto, and every year seems to uncover a few more fascinating details from the citys past. In addition to learning about the Irish who settled in the area (originally called the Township of Dublin), well also discuss the impacts of visits from the likes of a couple of the 19th centurys most compelling personalities, Charles Par...nell and ODonovan Rossa. There will NOT be a quiz at the end, however if you produce your Irish birth certificate or passport well pick up your first pint of Guinness. When tragedy occurs, its not just the mourners that get left behind. Old Toronto is rife with tales of spirits occupying buildings and public spaces. Nuns and politicians, husbands and jilted lovers, in hospitals, hotels and museums, well meet plenty in just 5k. Join me next Tuesday evening for the 2nd annual City Running Tours TorHAUNTo, starting at 7:00 p.m. outside the Hockey Hall of Fame. Just $20.00 reserves your spot. And if thats still not enough spirits for you, we...ll stop by Cest What afterwards and discuss what we may or may not have seen. Note this course differs slightly from last years, as Ive learned more stories and added a few new stops.
