A properly installed hot water tank can last between 5-10 years. Inside your tank, corrosive particles in your water are attracted to an anode rod to protect the tank lining, over time the anode rod deteriorates and will eventually stop doing its job, and the lining of the tank will begin to corrode. This isnt a health risk it just means that your anode rod needs to be replaced to help prolong the life of your tank! Hot water tanks should be serviced a minimum of once a year and you should consider replacing your tank if it is over 10 years of age, or if it starts leaking or making noise.
