December 1, 2020 - BOIL WATER ADVISORY To Consumers on the Chatham-Kent Municipal Water Supply for a portion of Pain Court Line in Pain Court. The Medical Officer of Health, Dr. David Colby, is advising residents to bring the water to a rolling boil for at least one minute prior to using it for domestic purposes e.g. drinking, making infant formula and juice, brushing teeth, washing raw foods and making ice.... The reason for the boil water advisory is due to a water main break. This advisory measure is in place until the Health Unit receives good results from two consecutive sets of samples taken a minimum of 24 hours apart. Media Release September 8, 2020 Pain Court Elevated Water Tower Unveiling CANCELLED The unveiling of the rehabilitated Pain Court Elevated Water Tower scheduled for this morning has been cancelled due to weather.... The contractor will continue to finalize the project and the PUC will be forwarding photos of the completed project at that time. PUC staff are still available for media interviews or a site visit when the project is completed within the next week. Noted below is last week’s media release as background for those who require it. A $2.3 million-dollar rehabilitation of Pain Court’s elevated water tower will be completed soon. A news conference to announce the completion of the tower rehabilitation and unveiling of the new tower logo will now be held Tuesday, September 8, at 11:00 am at Centennial Park/Parc Centennaire, 18-20 Notre Dame Street, Pain Court (behind the Ball Diamond). The project was undertaken in January of this year and involved the complete removal and replacement of the interior and exterior coatings of the tank as well as a number of other improvements. The tank was originally constructed in 1996 and is a major component of the Chatham water supply and distribution system operated by the Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission. The elevated tank provides water storage for the communities and areas around Pain Court and Dover. The project also included installation of a hydro-dynamic mixing system inside the tank to improve water age and chlorine residuals, installation of accessory upgrades including new antenna supports, upgrades to the lighting system, minor upgrades to the process mechanical equipment within the base of the structure, installation of additional health and safety features and a code-compliant guardrail system on the tank roof. Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission General Manager, Tim Sunderland said this is the fourth tank that has been rehabilitated in the last eight years. The work was completed by Landmark Municipal Services, Engineering and inspection services for the project were provided by CIMA Engineering. The improvements will increase the reliability of the tank, as well as its functionality for the next 20 years or more.

Media Release - Issued today, July 6, 2020 LAWN WATERING RESTRICTIONS FOR ALL CUSTOMERS ON MUNICIPAL WATER Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission (CK PUC) is implementing lawn watering restrictions for ALL customers, both residential and commercial, on municipal water.... The water restrictions are effective as of today, July 6, 2020 and are as follows: Customers with odd numbered addresses will be allowed to water their lawns on odd numbered days Customers with even numbered addresses will be allowed to water their lawns on even numbered days There will be a 2 month grace period for newly sodded lawns With the extended hot dry weather that this region has been experiencing, lawn watering has placed extra demands on all of our Water Treatment Plants said General Manager Tim Sunderland. This is the first step in the restrictions. CK PUC may need to implement further restrictions if the water plants do not see any relief. It has been several years since lawn watering restrictions were issued to municipal water customers of Chatham-Kent. The Water Use Restriction Policy was approved by PUC Commission in August 2003.

There have been a number of news articles lately over the use of disposable wipes being flushed down the toilet, into the sewer system. Due to the toilet paper shortages experienced during the COVID-19 event, people have used alternatives to toilet paper. Wipes labelled flushable may appear to go down the toilet without a problem; however, these wipes do NOT break down or disintegrate as quickly as toilet paper. This can cause maintenance issues within the sewage system as ...the wipes are more durable and do not break down, causing them to get stuck in pipes and pumps, which leads to blockages. Chatham-Kent PUC wastewater staff are available to respond to pump blockages 24/7 to keep the system working properly, and to date the PUC has not experienced an increase in blockages due to flushable wipes during this COVID-19 event; however, it does remain a concern. All CK PUC staff are working during this COVID-19 event to continue to provide safe, clean drinking water and the treatment of wastewater for all Chatham-Kent customers . . . but we need YOUR help in preventing sewage blockages and maintenance issues by avoiding flushing wipes and other products like grease, dental floss, paper towels, hair, diapers, or underwear etc, down the toilet. Please dispose of these items in the garbage, not the toilet!

Media Release - April 17, 2020 Work has begun on Relocation of downtown Chatham Sanitary Pump Station Work has started on a $3.5 million project by the Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission to relocate a sanitary pump station to a site near the intersection of King Street West and Second Street.... The contract was awarded to Birnam Excavating Limited. The existing pump station has been in operation since 1963 and is currently underground in the staging area in front of Station One of the Chatham-Kent Fire Services. The current location creates operational and safety challenges for the CK PUC as access and egress of emergency vehicles from the fire station cannot be impeded. The existing station is also experiencing on-going maintenance issues due to its age. It is being moved to the northeast corner of the intersection outside of the paved roadway. All work will be on the municipal boulevard and within the adjacent corner of the existing Chatham-Kent Police Services parking lot. Phase one work has commenced. This involves constructing the new underground pump station. Birnam Excavating’s subcontractor Matcon Canada along with HCM/RWH Engineering has begun step one which involves constructing the underground shoring/support system for the new pump station. The technology being used removes the potential risk to neighbouring buildings by eliminating ground vibration. It also speeds up excavating by eliminating welding of steel piles as the excavation progresses. It is anticipated that this construction work will be located outside of the paved roadway and there should be minimal to no impediment to traffic during the first phase of the project (March August 2020). Construction of the Pump Station is scheduled to be completed in August 2020 at which time work related to the reconstruction and redirection of sewers to this new station are then scheduled to commence. The phase two work is scheduled to begin in August 2020 and will be within the roadway and temporary closures, lane diversions and on-street parking restrictions can be expected as sewer construction is executed. It is anticipated that the project will be completed on schedule by November of 2020.
