Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Philippians 2:3-4 Paul wasn’t advocating for us to despise ourselves for the sake of others. He was advocating for a culture of mutual concern and carea community where everyone looks out for each other. Sometimes you can read verses like these and think, Wait, I’m not supposed to value mys...elf? But Paul was writing this in a communal sense, for the purpose of community living. Paul was trying to cultivate a spirit of mutual self-sacrifice. When everyone is concerned with looking out for everyone else, then everyone is taken care of. When everyone is concerned with valuing the other person, then everyone is valued. You can’t control what other people do, but you can control what you do. And what you can do is develop a spirit of honoring every person as a valuable member of the family of God so that together we can live out His desire that all of us experience a sense of worth and value. When we do this, we can love each other as we’ve been loved. We love each other like God loves us. And that was the point Paul was trying to get across.

Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. Romans 13:8 There’s nothing worse than feeling like we owe something to someone else. It’s almost as if we’re stuck under the weight of what we owe them, unable to move and with freedom nowhere to be found. The good news is that this verse gives us freedom. Paul is reminding us that the only thing we are called to owe each other is love. That’s the law God has asked us to follow. Love is the only thing we are owed by others, and it’s the only thing we owe to others. When we love, that fulfills God’s callHis lawfor our lives. So, this week, how can you go out of your way to give someone in your life the love they’re owed?

The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender. Proverbs 22:7 Do you know what it feels like to be enslaved to someone? While it’s mostly figurative language in today’s world, it’s used here to illustrate the way debt can make us feel. It’s as if we’re stuck with, tied to, and even overpowered by the debt we have. But here’s what’s important to remember: God didn’t call us to live our lives enslaved. He called us to freedom in all places and spaces in our lives, including our finances. And with His help, that freedom is possible. Where do you feel like you’re enslaved to money? Where do you feel a lack of freedom in your finances? Pray that God would move in that area of your life, setting you free from what is holding you back.

And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. Matthew 6:12 You may recognize this familiar line from the Lord’s prayer. Here, Jesus uses the word debt in a different way than we usually do. He’s not speaking specifically about money, but instead, about the things we’ve done. The wrongs, the sins, the mistakes. Whether we admit it or not, we all need God’s forgiveness from these debts in our lives. And we need His help to forgive those who have committed those debts against us. This short line in this prayer reminds us that God is the one who has the power to not only help us forgive, but to find forgiveness for ourselves. So, pray this week that God would help you seek forgiveness. Ask for His forgiveness for yourself, and then pray that He would help you forgive others along the way.

Friday Oct 9th If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 1 John 3:17 People know we are Christians by the way we live and love. One of the things that shows our faith lived out the most is generosity. When we have something to give to those who need it, we’re called to act. That action reflects what’s happening in our hearts. When we have something to give to those who need it, ...we’re called to act. And the actions we take reflect the generosity in our hearts, and our hearts reflect our faith. Remember, acts of generosity can look like so much more than just financial giving. We can give our time, our ears, our hearts, our possessions, and so much more. Think this week about how you can live out your faith by giving generously. Step out in faith this week to give to someone who needs it and let that generosity be an expression of your faith. Thursday Oct 8th A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold. Proverbs 22:1 So many of us desire more. We want more money, more stuff, more power. And the more we have, the better we think others will see us. But here, the Proverbs flips this on its head. It’s not what we have that gives us esteem in other’s eyes; it’s how we live our lives. It’s our character, our heart, and from that, our actions. A good reputation is more valuable than any riches we could possibly have. And we get that good reputation by living according to how God calls us to live. By being generous with what we have and by using it for the good of others. Pray this week that God would help you focus on living more than gaining. Ask that you would develop a good name because of who you are, not what you have.

Day 3 His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ Matthew 25:21 What has God entrusted to you? What has He given you to steward and use in this life? From this parable, Jesus pulls this lesson: When we are generous and faithful in the smallest things, He can trust us with more. He knows we’ll be good stewards of the big things. Remember ...that generosity doesn’t have to mean you have a lot. If you use what you do have, big or small, with wisdom and for good, you are living out generosity. You’re being a good and faithful servant. God is looking to see if you will be a good steward over the things you have right now. This week, look for small ways to be generous with what you have, showing God and others that you want to be a faithful steward of all He’s given you. See more

Day 2 You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. For God loves a person who gives cheerfully. 2 Corinthians 9:7 NLT When we hear people at church talk about money, so often we want to run screaming in the other direction. Why? Because we’re afraid we’re going to be forced to give, like were quilted into giving, or told we’re bad if we don’t give enough or the right amount. Paul’s words are ones we can come bac...k to when we feel this tension in ourselves. We’re called to give, not because of pressure or in reluctant obligation but because of what God has done for us. We can give with a cheerful heart when we give because God gave first to us. It’s not about what or how much we give; it’s about the Who inspiring us to give. Pray this week that God would give you a cheerful heart, reminding you that as you give you are giving because of all He’s given to you. See more

Day 1 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us allhow will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Romans 8:32 The greatest gift we’ve ever received is the gift of Jesus Himself. God gave us His Son, fully and completely. It’s the ultimate gift with the ultimate reward. With that in mind, how can we worry that God won’t give us more than what we need? It’s human nature to wonder if God is going to provide for us. But if we find ourselves ...holding back on being generous because we’re afraid that God won’t provide for us, we just have to look back to Jesus. He has already given us more than enough and because of that, we can trust that He’ll continue to provide for us in the present and in the future. Do you struggle to believe that God will provide for you? Does that sometimes impact your ability to be generous? Pray that God would change your heart, helping you not only to remember the gift of Jesus, but to find peace in knowing that God has given and will keep giving you all you need. See more
