DENTURE ADJUSTMENT & REPAIRS Millions of people wear dentures everyday, but how do they know when they need to be adjusted and/or repaired? . (1) DISCOMFORT if you are experiencing mouth soreness, or uneven pressure, speak with your Denturist to have this issue corrected.... (2) DIFFICULTY CHEWING may indicate that your dentures need to be refitted to the exact shape of your gums. (3) BROKEN TEETH if dentures are accidentally dropped, or too much pressure is put on them, chances are teeth will break. Do not reattach the teeth yourself using glue as this can cause an irregular fit and/or ill-fitting denture. (4) CHIPS OR CRACKS can create sharp and sometimes uneven surfaces that can irritate the gums. (5) PRESSURE SORES on your gums can cause a great amount of pain. If this occurs, dentures need to be adjusted. (6) GUM IRRITATION inflammation, bleeding or raw spots in the mouth may indicate an issue in the denture’s surface. (7) FACIAL SHAPE CHANGES if you notice chances in your facial appearance, you may need to an adjustment. . October is National Denturist Awareness Month! In 1997, it was officially announced in Canada’s Parliament that October is National Denturist Awareness Month to make the public more aware of the specialized training, education, and licensing of Denturists, and about the role of Denturists in providing patients with services to benefit their oral health. Why is October Important for Denturists?... October was declared National Denturist Awareness Month as read and declared in the House of Commons as Standing Order 31 (SO31) on Tuesday, October 7, 1997. Denturists are oral health care professionals that provide denture services directly to the public who are endeavoring to make the public more aware of this profession by promoting and advancing the profession through public education. Denturism has been a recognized health profession in Canada since as early as 1961 and all Provinces/Territories have Denturism as a regulated profession. Denturists are highly trained in the fabrication and fitting of dentures directly to the public. Denturists play an essential role in the oral health team and the overall wellness for many individuals and regular appointments with a Denturist can ensure a beautiful and healthy smile for years to come.
