Battle of the WillsFaith Spelbring A three-year-old girl sat at the dinner table. Her uneaten food was the only thing left on the table. It had been forty-five minutes since the rest of her family had cleared their plates and enjoyed dessert. No amount of bribery or threats would get the girl to eat. Even though she usually liked the dish, this particular night she simply refused to eat it and demanded something else. When in faith we pray, Thy will be done, we are aski...ng God to ignore the three-year-old who lives inside us and screams, My will be done! To utter these words is admitting to God that His ways are better than ours. Even when we don’t understand His ways, they are better than ours. To utter the words Thy will be done! in prayer to our Lord requires one of two things: either total laziness to rattle off words without thinking about what we are saying, or great and God-given faith to bravely ask God to ignore our selfish will and enact His good and gracious will, even if we do not comprehend or like it. When one considers the selfish nature of humans in comparison to the good and gracious character of our God, revealed especially in Jesus, our Savior, perhaps it is wise to pray these words after all. CLOSING PRAYER: Take my will and make it Thine, It shall be no longer mine; Take my heart, it is Thine own, It shall be Thy royal throne (LSB 783: 5). Amen.

Even though you know the Word perfectly and have already mastered everything, you are daily under the dominion of the devil, and he does not rest day or night in seeking to take you unawares and to kindle in your heart unbelief and wicked thoughts against these three and all the other commandments. Therefore you must constantly keep God’s Word in your heart, on your lips, and in your ears. For where the heart stands idle and the Word is not heard, the devil breaks in and does his damage before we realize it. On the other hand, when we seriously ponder the Word, hear it, and put it to use, such is its power that it never departs without fruit. (LC I 100101; K-W, 400)

Let me tell you this, even though you know God’s Word perfectly and are already a master in all things: you are daily in the devil’s kingdom [Colossians 1:1314]. He ceases neither day nor night to sneak up on you and to kindle in your heart unbelief and wicked thoughts against these three commandments and all the commandments. Therefore, you must always have God’s Word in your heart, upon your lips, and in your ears. But where the heart is idle and the Word does not make a s...ound, the devil breaks in and has done the damage before we are aware [Matthew 13:2430]. On the other hand, the Word is so effective that whenever it is seriously contemplated, heard, and used, it is bound never to be without fruit [Isaiah 55:11; Mark 4:20]. It always awakens new understanding, pleasure, and devoutness and produces a pure heart and pure thoughts [Philippians 4:8]. For these words are not lazy or dead, but are creative, living words [Hebrews 4:12]. Various. Devotions on the Small Catechism (p. 18). Concordia Pub House. Kindle Edition.

Satan accused God of building walls of protection all around Job and his family and household (Job 1:10). According to Satan, that’s why Job was so upright. Yet Luther says above that those hedges of protection are exactly what God wants around every husband and wife and around every family. Picture a ten-foot-high invisible fence around every marriage, keeping intruders away, building trust in the family, resisting temptations, ensuring safety for the children. Some would t...ell us today that marriage is purely a private matter, that the marriages of others are none of our business. Luther couldn’t disagree more. God makes marriage the basic building block and foundation of all society. When husbands and wives separate or divorce, it’s not a private matter. It affects parents, children, friends, neighbors, church family, and the whole community. In those difficult cases, God is certainly gracious and merciful and will make all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). Yet God and all of us would much prefer to use this Sixth Commandment as a great fortress of protection around every marriage. None of us can say about marriage and families, That’s not my business. God commands everyone to help and protect. Onward, Christian soldiers! Fight for husbands and wives and children. (2019-05-20T23:58:59). Devotions on the Small Catechism . Concordia Pub House.
