Claudette Garland Councillor District 6 & Former Deputy Mayor of MODL 26.10.2020

It was close but I won't be returning as Councillor for District 6. Votes were 490 to 404, Best wishes to you all with your new Councillor. I thoroughly enjoyed my last 8 years and the privilege to serve you all. It's all good, this opens me up for a new venture I have been undecided about. ;) All things for a reason. My very best to the new Council. :)

It is heart warming to receive the phone calls, read all the emails and messages on social media. If you haven't already voted, I would ask that you to consider voting for me today, but if not please exercise your right to vote, it is a privilege still denied to many in the world.

Although I am running for re-election of Councillor for District 6 in the Municipal Election on October 17th I have made the very difficult decision to not do door to door campaigning this election due to Covid-19 and the fact we are still under a State of Emergency by the Province. The health and safety of all constituents was my first and foremost concern. I also took a stand to reduce physical waste and visual clutter and not distribute handouts or erect signage. I do have... 100 signs from two previous elections that could have been used but decided against it. While many of you know me personally and are familiar with me and my work of the past 8 years as your Councillor, those of you who may be new to the community are able to gather insight on my professional page Claudette Garland Councillor District 6 & Former Deputy Mayor of MODL. If any of you have any questions or concerns I am always available @ 902-543-1029, my personal email [email protected] or my current MODL email [email protected]. It has been my honour to work for and serve all of you the past 8 years and I hope to be able to continue to work for you. All the very best to everyone. See more

Watercourse pipes were installed on Lohnes Drive in Pine Grove over the last few days, roads staked off and bush cutting done on Charlie Lane and Dawson Heights in preparation for new paving to begin soon on all three roads. I'm just as excited as the residents to have this work commence. I fought long hard battles for a few years to see this come to fruition. Also was successful in getting the Harold Whynot Rd. and MacCulloch Rd. resurfaced which are being done this work sea...son as well. New pavement, ditching and a huge new watercourse culvert done on the Old Northfield Rd. through Maitland, is almost completed, a little paving to blend where it ended before the culvert installation. These roads were agreed upon in this 2020 year. The Pine Grove Rd was completed a few years ago during my term as Councillor, with walking lanes added as well, another long hard fought battle. Proud of my accomplishments in regards to road work in my District. I still continue to fight for the Sweetland Rd., Spruce Street, Orphan's Home Rd and a few others as well. There are a few more roads that are already on the priority list for 2021. During my past 8 years as Councillor for District 6, I have built a great working relationship MLA Suzanne Lohnes Croft, my Council and with the Department of Transportation. :) Not all roads hit the work list each year, there is only so much money allocated each year for road work but that doesn't mean I give up finding ways and money, advocating and fighting for the other roads in my District. I'm very determined and stick with it. I have been very successful thus far with regards to road work and will continue to keep advocating if re-elected. See more

Claudette Garland Councillor District 6 & Former Deputy Mayor of MODL 20.07.2020

As you may already know, I am re-offering and running again for the position of Councillor for District 6 in the upcoming Oct. 17th Municipal election. The trad...itional ways of campaigning are more and more difficult during a pandemic as we adhere to the health directions set out under the Health Protection Act. Out of respect for my constituents I have decided not to do a door to door campaign or leave flyers. This may have a negative impact as some do still expect a visit but I've also heard negative feedback from residents that have had a door to door visit and were not appreciative of such. I thought long and hard before making this decision. We're still under a state of emergency and my number one concern is the vulnerability of the residents of MODL and at no point do I want to compromise the well being of you or anyone else. Safety of the people is my first priority. I'm still, if not more so, passionate about this job, I am an employee of the people and I take that position very seriously. I'm committed to the residents to do my best to make informed decisions in their best interests. I'm determined and results driven. Internet has been a priority and we have an agreement in place that will connect over 90% of MODL with reliable high speed. I have fought for and successfully had many roads within my District resurfaced, upgraded or work to begin this season to be resurfaced. Pine Grove Road, Charlie Lane, Dawson Heights, Lohnes Drive, MacCulloch Road, Naugler Road, Maitland Rd. (Old Northfield Rd) and upgrades to the Sweetland Rd.. I fully supported the internet tower project in Sweetland and have implemented the Dangerous & Unsightly Committee to assist and navigate residents who find themselves facing one of these situations. I work with dogged determination to educate, inform and find a resolve for Lyme Disease. I've been appointed to the last two hiring committees to hire a new Chief Administrative Officer and am currently on the hiring committee to interview and hire a new Chief Operations Officer for the Municipal Joint Services Board. I've also held the position of Deputy Mayor twice, once with Mayor Don Downe and once with Mayor Carolyn Bolivar-Getson. Had served as a past board member of the LCLC, Police Advisory Board and currently the Municipal Joint Services board, where I am Chair of the Finance Committee. Have been Chair of MODL Finance twice and current Chair of the Audit Committee. Fiscal responsibility and careful decision making with the public purse is a priority for me. I have always been personally financially responsible and now as a widow even more so. I take my job as Councillor very seriously and during my husband's cancer journey I did my best to fully continue my role as Councillor and missed only a couple of meetings due to his treatment schedule. The passing of my husband and my mother two years ago this month only 42 days apart did not slow my pace for my commitment to my constituents. My dedication to this job is unwavering. I've also served on the South Shore Housing Action Coalition, The Municipal Alcohol Project, Fire Services, Planning & Advisory, to name a few of my past involvements. My passion for new Doctor attraction and retention, new residents , high speed internet, road improvements, new business, growth economically in District 6 and all of MODl is a high priority for me. Exit 12, Osprey Village is a prime example with much of my behind the scenes work to grow this area. Nothing happens as quickly as I would like but I am determined to see things through. My past performance and reputation is my election statement. I do ask for your support in the upcoming Election and would be honoured and privileged to serve as your Councillor again. You can contact me with any questions or concerns you may have here on Facebook, by phone 902-543-1029 or email [email protected] Please share this message. :) See more

The upcoming Municipal Election will be different this year in many aspects, from how a candidate runs their campaign to how the votes are cast due to Covid-19. No candidate should ever be running for a seat because of a personal agenda, jealousy or they're bored. Those are not valid reasons to be in politics or public service nor are they fair to the electorate or community at large. Choose wisely when you are voting....if they are re-offering, who has a history of doing goo...d for the area they wish to represent and for the Municipality as a whole. If they are a new candidate, take the time to do some research about them. Not every candidate will be going door to door during this election, for the health & safety of constituents. All the best to those who are running and have a true interest in serving the people, a passion for the job, the time commitment and dedication it involves. I do hope to have the privilege of serving District 6 once again. For the week prior to and on October 17th, I ask for your continued support. See more
