Shipping Delays / Lost Packages Guess what? If you ship enough packages, it will eventually happen. It sucks, we know. But this is simply a part of your business that you should understand and accept. Please take time to review your freight agreements in full. Here’s a few pieces of information that may help you in your shipping journey. Feel free to ask us for more information or to clarify any of these points. You’ll need to educate yourself so you can properly co...mmunicate these points to your customers and develop a policy for when loss and delay happens Delay Unless you’re paying extra for guaranteed service, the posted transit times are simply the normal expectation. You have no recourse if your shipment that should have made it in 2 days, takes 6. Don’t promise a delivery date to your customer and make sure they know that delays can happen. If it’s imperative that your customer HAS to have their goods by a certain date, offer guaranteed service for an increased fee. 92% of shipments do meet their expected transit times. No major courier/carrier is much better or worse than another. It’s in everyone’s best interest to hit their posted transit times. Adverse weather conditions, mis-sorts, vehicle issues, shipping label issues, consignee address issues and many more factors can impact transit time. Loss Typically, your freight partner will cover $2/lb and up to the first $100 of value if/when loss happens. You may claim back the freight charge and all or a portion of YOUR cost of the goods sold(not the price your selling it for). You can’t claim for loss sales and lost time. You may purchase additional insurance for your shipments with the carrier or courier at time of shipment processing in order to cover the entire cost of your goods if loss does occur. Typically, this will cost you between $2-$3 per $100 of value. Use your judgment when shipping high value goods. Lost packages may occur because of theft after delivery(porch pirates), label issues, shipments being incorrectly addressed etc etc. Much less than 1% of shipments are lost. If you ship 100 packages a week, be prepared to get a where is my package message or 2 from your customers. Proactive education and expectation setting will help everyone. Shippers, customers and freight partners all lose when loss or delay happens. Be courteous and kind to your partners. Visibility Reliability You now have a carrier/courier that supplies you and your customers with tracking throughout your shipments journey. Awesome right? Well, the increased visibility could cause an increase in customer inquiries about where their shipment is and may cause you some panic as well Why? Previously, if not offering tracking, your customers order ships to them and is received when they sign for it or find it on their doorstep. Perhaps it takes 2 days to get to them after it shipped, and they are probably just fine with that. But what if that shipment was actually a 1 day point and now they received tracking after the shipment was picked up saying that was going to deliver a day earlier? With great tracking comes great responsibility. That’s the saying right? This again is an opportunity to set reasonable expectations with your customers and yourself. As mentioned in a prior post, 92% of shipments make it to the end user on or before the estimated date of arrival and we’ve discussed the various reasons for delay. Tracking updates can also be subject to inaccuracies and inconsistencies. User error, partner carriers not supplying proper info, tech issues etc. can impact up to date tracking correctness. Last week, we encountered a shipment with no tracking updates for 6 days. This shipment was handed off to a partner courier for final delivery in a remote area of Canada. Turns out, the partner courier making final delivery had called the customer and was advised that they were out of the country and would not be returning for a week. So there the shipment sits, for a week with no tracking updates as the shipper sees that nothing is moving and only imagines the worst. If this shipment had no tracking, no one would be the wiser. Nearly 100% of shipments eventually make it to the final destination, for the vast majority of shipments, tracking is wonderful to have, BUT know this can be a double edged sword if you decide to offer. #shipsmart

You’ve sent a 4 pound box to your customer but you were billed as if it were 20lbs. If you haven’t already encountered this, you will. Why did this occur? Cubic weight and dim weight factor. First, with any courier or carrier agreement, pay special attention to the dim weight factor(lbs per cubic ft) that the carrier or courier will be applying to your rates. We’ve seen this in the range of 8 to as high as 16 lbs per cu ft. If you’re comparing rates, understanding ...and accounting for this makes a MASSIVE difference in your costs. Here’s a simple calculation to identify your basic cubic weight. (LxWxH)in inches/1728 Now let’s use 12.4lbs as the dim weight factor for this example as this is becoming quite standard. And we’ll also use a 12x14x16, 4 pound box in our example. (12x14x16)/1728 = 1.56 Now, multiply your result by your dim weight factor, in this case it’s 12.4. 1.56 x 12.4 = 19.34lbs Voila! Your 4 lb box will now be billed as 20 lbs. To save on freight costs, be cognizant of the dim weight factor in your agreements and try to negotiate a lower one. And if possible, reduce the cubic size of your shipments.
