"The COVID-19 recovery presents us with an opportunity to build a low-carbon resilient economy. Past experiences and independent research confirm that energy efficiency programs do not result in cheap and easy climate solutions. It is time to focus on fuel switching." University of Victoria Professor Katya Rhodes weighs in with her piece "BCs Green Stimulus Needs to Focus on Fuel Switching Not Energy Efficiency". Article by Dogwood BC: Why would we buy power from California, while shutting down Indigenous and community-owned clean energy projects here in B.C.? Former board member, Dr. Judith Sayers puts it well. It seems every time the government takes a step with energy policy its away from B.C. First Nations. We have the skills, capacity, desire, and the right to be partners now in creating a new energy future in B.C. Nuu-Chah-Nulth Tribal Council President Judith Sayers said when reached for comment on the bill. It was a surprise that this amendment was done. In not consulting us the government is violating the spirit of the B.C. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act if not the act itself.
The Government of BC introduced Bill 41 at the end of 2019. Read the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act 2019/2020 Annual Report here: https://www2.gov.bc.ca//abori/dripa_annual_report_2020.pdf Clean Energy BC members, please check your inbox and RSVP to Anitra Paris for a webinar with Jessica Wood, Assistant Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation on Tuesday July 14.

Did you know that run-of-the-river hydro is #renewable, environmentally-friendly, and it can even enhance the fish and wildlife habitat in the area? These are some of the reasons why the Squamish Nation chose this #cleantech to power their community. After 40 years, this #Indigenous community will be the sole owners of the Culliton Creek Hydro Project, which means everyday they are moving closer to total energy sovereignty. Let the sun shine bright! After a long five-year journey, the Tsilhqotin Nation is excited to announce that the solar farm is now feeding into the grid and op...erational effective May 28, 2020. The solar farm is located 80 km west of Williams Lake on what is known as the Riverwest Sawmill Site. The 1.25-MW solar farm is the largest of its kind in British Columbia and is a hundred percent developed, built, owned and operated by the Tsilhqotin Nation through its economic arm, Dandzen Development LP. Construction started in October 2018 however; due to unforeseen and unpreventable circumstances the project was delayed, and completion was winter of 2020. The 3,456 solar modules, will convert the suns rays into electricity which will then be sent into the BC Hydro grid that runs along highway 20. The solar farm can generate up to approximately 1,500 megawatt hours of electricity per year depending on the amount of sun that year. The Dandzen Development LP has entered into ac Electrical Purchase Agreement with BC Hydro for 25 years (2045). We would like to thank all the funders who have assisted in making this project a reality; Indigenous Services Canada, Western Economic Diversification, Province of British Columbia, New Relationship Trust, Ecosmart and Cariboo Chilcotin Aboriginal Training and Employment Centre (CCATEC).
