The David Suzuki foundation provides great tips for creating a beautiful butterfly garden. There are many things you can do year-round to attract butterflies and support their habitats. Creating and restoring butterfly habitat offsets what development, roadside mowing or wetland drainage have destroyed. (Gardening pesticide-free helps, too.) Many butterfly species don’t migrate. You can provide habitat and food for their entire life cycle eggs, larvae, pupae AND adults t...hroughout the year. Think beyond providing flowers for nectar in the height of summer Read the full story here: https://loom.ly/K-pMPcA #earthdayiseveryday #getwoketotheplanet
Be bright about your energy usage. Making a concerted effort to reduce how much electricity you use around the house can really add up. And the great thing is you won’t just be reducing your impact on the earth, but on your wallet as well. Through small actions like hanging your clothes to dry or by turning lights off if you’ll be out of the room longer than 15 minutes, you will be taking basic but essential steps to reduce your carbon footprint.
Looking for new ways to be sustainable in 2021? We can help with that. Let's start with this one: Opt for cruelty-free beauty. Steer clear from animal tested products and ensure your beauty products aren’t harmful to animals. Always read the labels and question brands on the ingredients. What are your favourite cruelty free brands?... #SustainableTips #yeg #yeggers #Yeglocal
By composting, you are making sure that food isn’t going into landfill and contributing to the climate crisis, says Lori Nikkel, CEO of Canadian food rescue organization Second Harvest. But, as Nikkel points out, it’s also a simple way to make really good soil that will nurture all the plant babies you acquired while sheltering in place. And while composting can seem daunting for those who live in apartments or have small outdoor spaces, it’s easier than you think. Read more here: https://loom.ly/BEPMb0A

Okay this is a huge one, let's talk about those Christmas Trees. Choose a Live Tree! Although plastic Christmas trees are reusable from year to year, real trees are the more sustainable choice. Plastic trees are made of petroleum products (PVC), and use up resources in both the manufacture and shipping. While artificial trees theoretically last forever, research shows that they are typically discarded when repeated use makes them less attractive. Discarded artificial trees a...re then sent to landfills, where their plastic content makes them last forever. Instead, consider live potted trees! Live potted trees can be used for years: If you buy a small tree in a large pot, you may be able to reuse the tree for 2- 3 years without having to plant or repot the tree. (Research Rent-A-Tree services in your area!) Another great alternative: turn your houseplant into a Christmas tree - all you need is some lights and our compostable ornaments. A not-for-profit here in Edmonton accepts Christmas trees for animal habitats! So once you're done with them, you can give them a new home! Let's talk about sustainable Gift wrapping. 8,000 tons of wrapping paper are used during the holidays each year, equating to roughly 50,000 trees. This is a great one, and to decorate, you can use some of your leftover dehydrated oranges from our previous post! Choose Alternatives to Commercial Gift Wrap!... There are many options which are cost-free, attractive solutions. Gift bags can be made using fabric scraps (as pictured), or wrapping can be made using comic strips from the paper, old calendars, maps, posters and more If you can't make alternatives work, start with these few simple ideas that make a huge difference. Use Tape Sparingly, Or Not At All. Avoid Buying Glossy Foil or Metallic Wrapping Paper. Reuse Gift Wrap Where Possible. Looking for more ways to hold a sustainable Christmas celebration in your home? Try using a free design app like Canva if you want to get creative. You're bound to know some people who won’t be able to receive an e-card but why not try giving them a call to wish them good will? If a card is needed, make one from recycled materials, or shop local - try to find ones made from recycled materials and not con...taining plastics such as glitter.
