Clean North 11.12.2020

Once again, Clean North will recycle your fresh-cut Christmas tree into mulch. Starting Saturday, December 26, you can bring your tree to our collection depot at Cambrian Mall by Winners. We will accept trees through January 9, 2021. We will also accept: Blankets/towels for the Humane Society Books/magazines for Friends of the Library Empty prescription bottles with lids for Earthhub (if possible, remove labels)... If you are interested in helping with tree collection and chipping, visit our Volunteer page and fill out a volunteer application. Takes only a few minutes! Need help getting your tree to the depot? The first weekend of January, JUSTJUNK will pick up old Christmas trees for free and deliver them to our collection depot. You must live within the city limits, and this service is limited to the first 100 requests. Schedule tree pickup here. If you have an artificial Christmas tree you wish to get rid of, please note that they are not recyclable. In fact, older fake trees should be bagged and put in the trash as many contain lead. Did you know? Over the years, Clean North has recycled more than 100,000 fresh-cut Christmas trees! Questions? Email us at [email protected]. #recycle #christmastree #sustainableholidays #mulch #cleannorthsault #saultstemarie

Choose reusable gift wrap and help prevent a mountain of trash from filling up our local landfill! Google "Furoshiki" wrapping using cloth...or if you have a sewing machine, take a couple of hours and whip up some gift bags. You can also use newspapers or cut up paper grocery sacks. #giftwrapping #zerowaste #plasticfree #reduce #cleannorthsault #saultstemarie

There is no better family activity during this pandemic than participating in the Christmas bird count! Get outside, get some fresh air and exercise, and be a citizen scientist!

We at Clean North could not be more delighted by this news. Locally grown food is critical to a sustainable community.

More and more people are turning to artificial Christmas trees. Some like the convenience, while others worry that cutting down real trees is bad for the environment. But the reality is, while artificial trees may look green, they are generally not environmentally friendly. For example...many artificial trees that have PVC in them have lead in them and can drop lead dust into your house. There is no safe level of lead for babies and children. The older the artificial tree, the more likely it is to contain lead and to drop lead dust. Click the below link to go to our blog and read all the pros and cons of artificial and real Christmas trees. #leadfree #plasticfree #greenchristmas #sustainableliving #natural #cleannorthsault #saultstemarie

Did you know Ontario's recycling system is about to change in a big way?? And you can have a say in how that happens! We urge you to learn more and then let the province know your thoughts. The government says their proposed new system will get the recycling monkey off the backs of municipal governments and onto the backs of companies that produce packaging waste. At first glance, this sounds like a win...but click to our blog post to read more about the shortfalls of the proposed changes. We also provide links to click to give your input. These changes will have a huge impact on our recycling system and the environment in the years to come so please take time to learn about them and offer up your feedback to the government. #ontario #recycle #plasticfree #sustainableliving Plastic-free Sault Ste. Ontario's auditor general says the province will likely not meet greenhouse gas emissions targets -- to reduce emissions by 30% below 2005 levels by 2030. A key issue: Two government ministries and a key agency on the file neither assess or enforce building energy efficiency compliance, despite it being a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. She also found many instances of the province not following Environmental Bill of Rights rules. In fall and winter, plant stems are refuges for our native insects.

Those of us with the good fortune to live in #saultstemarie and #algoma District are truly blessed! There's never been a better time to take advantage of our spectacular winter sports opportunities. During the pandemic, outdoors (socially distanced of course) is the safest way to exercise and socialize. And when we spend time in nature, it helps us better appreciate the importance of protecting our wild places and spaces. Let's get skating, snowshoeing, skiing, and yes, even winter cycling! :D Lake Superior Watershed Conservancy The Kensington Conservancy Hiawatha Highlands Crimson Ridge Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club VĂ©lorution Bike & Ski Algoma Bicycle

Economic sustainability matters, too. If we have a strong local tax base, then we can afford to look after the environment.

Please do not put plastic bags into your recycling bin. Our local recycling facility does not accept them, and they can gum up machinery and cause issues in the recycling process. Two Metro stores in the Sault (Churchill Plaza, next to Value Village) still accept soft plastics for recycling or you can reuse them as trash or poop scooping bags. #recycle #recycleright #plasticbags #plasticfree #cleannorthsault #sault

Which beverage containers have the least environmental impact? The reality is, they all have environmental costs, with recycled aluminum coming out as the best of the bunch according to this analysis. Glass was at the bottom of the barrel due to high energy costs associated with production, transportation, and recycling. Regardless, what we really need is for people to stop buying so many individually packaged beverages. We all know that sweet beverages, both regular and diet, are very unhealthy. If you really want to help the environment as well as your health, drink more tap water and fewer bottled beverages. #recyle #reduce #plasticfree #sustainableliving #cleannorthsault #saultstemarie
