We seem to value digitally enhanced masters of zeros and ones over those who advocate peace by embodying peace themselves. For your contemplation: about these and all times. Most leadership passes as the blind leading the blind. Not only in politics, but also business, sports, institutions, families and civil society. ... No ones fault, per se, but a feature of humanitys eyes looking out, rather than first looking within. We require corrective lens. Otherwise, how can we lead when impinged by unconsciousness? That primitive, buggy mind/body software program that constantly commands, pulls strings, then whispers, among many utterances, a powerful, crippling theme: "Not good enough." Or.... "Not fast enough." "You are behind." "You should have (fill in the blank with your current fear or desire of choice: IE - relationship? Property? Money? Position? Fame? Medals? Labels? World Records? Followers?) "Kill anyone in the way." "Dissent is a personal attack." "My way is the only way." "Eff em all." Or, the one that often drives them all: "You are worthless - on a good day." All the above statements are a violent case of mistaken identity that drive action, limits high performance, undermines leadership, and especially causes suffering so great, so gnarly, so subtle that often we dont know its driving us. Into the ground. Into an early grave. Into illness. Into broken relationships. You are not what you too often think, feel, but far, far better. The only way out is to know that more-far, far more-of you exist then you currently know. Lets shorten these lines For almost three months Ive been in long lines like this one, awaiting food baskets from food banks. These lines are getting longer; sadly this will be considered a short line months from now, I and others predict. Job loss, government money running out and house and apartment evictions will elongate lines... The composition of the line today is mostly elderly. They stand, masked and patiently, under the citys heat alert which expects temperatures near 40C. (It is already 30C and 9:30 AM). I have been given instructions by a single mother to pick up veggies, flour, no canned food, diapers, formula, milk and gift cards. But the food bank distributes what it has been given, based on the generosity of people and organizations. They have little flexibility, but do wonders with what they have to offer. AHEAD This is not meant to be pessimistic: however, reality indicates these lines will grow much longer as people who lost their jobs can no longer afford food or rent. One advocate for the homeless forecasts 1930s like fallout. Its 32C, and people much older than me wait for what is now about 45 minutes under the suns scorch for vital scraps from tables. Please give, if you are able, to a food bank or homeless organizations as it is now needed more than ever before. It is near impossible to change culture-organizational, governmental, institutional and others-unless everyone in civil society understands that they also have a direct role to play in change. That role? We all must be the change we want to see. We must know, then embody, what it means to be fully human. Imagine that world, one where all-confident in the self knowledge we all are whole, limitless, complete, magnificent, non dual and yes, ordinary-all participate in life he...lping others dissolve ignorance, unconsciousness, that inhibits, limits who we really are. All cultures are burdened by the heavy eclipse of unconsciousness. They are further impacted by the cultures of all stakeholders. Urging a culture, police, healthcare, political party, community or government to change is fine, but we all have the fingerprints on the current culture that requires that change. We co-created it. That obliges those who subscribe to this to dissolve ignorance that is the source of much suffering. We all have it. (Even many who claim enlightenment). One example: the number one universal value is do no harm. If we do not take care of our own physical and mental health, then other cultures will likely be affected. Weekend funnies with a dash of reflection I remember my glorious start in goal for the University of Western Ontario Soccer team well. It was perfect for Covid times as no one attended, even girlfriends, who favoured football and wine skins.... It was a cloudy, wet, rainy and chilly day-common for fall soccer. And it made the ball sting and slip, too, at speeds I was unaccustomed to as high school soccer was much slower. Now, about this picture: the Seoul FC promoted social distancing and bolstered attendance by placing these figures in the stands. The trouble is they are sex dolls, unbeknownst to the football club. Back at University, I played well enough to secure the third string position, in front of one coach formerly from Boston U and my team mates (15 keepers were in training camp). Just one year prior to that start my spine was broken - apparently deliberately - while playing on a similar fall afternoon at a pitch for the rich. I was told after my recovery the initial concern was whether Id walk again. So I suppose the gift of playing one year later, making a Varsity team, albeit starting in the basement, needs no roaring crowd, but rather a profound sense of gratitude. Breaking news: today in homelessness A press conference now at Moss Park, at a makeshift camp for the homeless.... Hosted by one of Canadas angels, Cathy Crowe, a street nurse whos brought awareness and resources to solve a problem that persists. It seems to persist, in part, because it is seen as a blemish, an eyesore and more likely a failing which we choose to ignore. Its easier to exclaim law and order, and conjure short term tactics to deeply entrenched societal problems. The spokespeople suggest politicians are more comfortable sweeping the problem under a bulldozer. Homelessness is an extraordinary problem that too often is met with short term solutions and force. Todays organizers ask for tents, sleeping bags, tarps to be delivered to these encampments. FOR YOUR CONTEMPLATION An innocent appearing experience today prompts this post. Our unconscious attitudes often kill. They certainly harm. ... Briefly: a man on his cell phone began talking loudly in primitive French, blocking the narrow path towards stairs to a ravine. I approached him carefully, respecting social distancing, and politely asked if I could pass. He then moved, and then told his friend (who one assumes is either in Quebec or France) the following: "Im in Canada. Yeah. A guy just wanted me to move. Theyve been browbeaten by their government to give up their freedoms. They all are going crazy social distancing." I walked on, said nothing, but observed that attitude may kill him - and others. Our unconsciousness, often expressed as rugged individualism, win at all costs, domination, superiority (and much more) is in constant violation of who we really are. Our reality-who we really are-attends to the whole. Our unconsciousness (ignorance) attends to self-interest. This stress causes incalculable chaos, destruction, disease, unhappiness and more. (The trickster mind and ego mask it well with all sorts of strategies). Now, for those of us whose boundaries were violated, especially when young, this is very confusing, because the pattern is different: youre likely to be in service to others needs, not knowing our own. In this horrible situation, its hard to discern what is good for you when that was never taught, nor mirrored. Instead, the wiring defaults: whats good for you is to serve anothers needs. Millions of decisions, questions and choices arise each day in business, politics, institutions and civil society. When we source how we respond from the solid foundation of ontological reality we will likely contribute to the greater good. For your contemplation If we valued ourselves, wed value others. Each human being has a bridge to cross. On one side a hardwired ignorance persists and runs us, fueled by incessant fears and desires. ... On this side well still see much of the world but well suffer, burdened by a primitive, buggy software program with a superficial interface that belies anxiety, shame, guilt, pride and loads more. Most often those in this side have a horrible, private internal conversation: I am not good enough. And they hurt themselves and others as a result. Its a broken chat line that maintains a false identity. To know the real you-and to breathe new life in all life-some learn of another side of a bridge, called self knowledge. To cross that bridge you must have a burning desire to get to know yourself- your real self, not the one burdened by that mistaken identity. Few dare; but many pretend to cross. It is more comfortable to stay on the side they know: full of false notions, entrenched, unconscious values, violent prejudices, old family stories and more that will seem to attack you while crossing. But it makes a living. A precise map exists to cross the bridge proven to help others see the magnificent light of the other side. The closer you get to other side, the more those limitations - paralyzing doubts, prejudices and mental, emotional and physical pains - will burn off, dissolve. On the other side you will then learn to embody this new found knowledge, and bathe in the light of what it means to be fully human. Freedom, joy, meaning, fulfillment will arise. So too will universal values such as do no injury be realized. FOR YOUR CONTEMPLATION It seems popular to rant against or rally for police (and many others) now. Thats understandable but probably unhelpful. ... It misses the critical point. Besides, cheers, rants and rages are often just the ego being a trickster to deflect stuff that provokes difficult feelings within us. A much larger reality exists, revealed through the answer to this question: to what degree do we all ensure the well being of all - people, planet - with no exceptions? Until we learn and then embody the universal value "do no injury," we all have the fingerprints on the gun, or knees on necks. This is not meant to be inflammatory, though it might be to some who think they are unable to commit such atrocities. But then if one took that famous "fierce moral inventory" - and was really fierce - one would likely find astonishing levels of self harm and unconscious harm to others that flow from that unconsciousness. We are better - far better - than we know. Were terribly afflicted by a worldwide pandemic thats been around forever: a lack of self-worth. If we erased the ignorance that obscures who we really are, we wouldnt be treating ourselves and others aspects of ourselves - other people, all planet - poorly. Because we wouldnt have to prove our worth, or remedy fear, or fulfill desires at anothers expense. One police officers fear of powerlessness is anothers fear of poverty, or lack of worth or (fill in long blanks). One kills life. One kills planets. One kills ones self. Ignorance kills; Self-knowledge fulfills. To know what it means to be fully human is a protest against your unconscious conditioning. A loving advocacy for yourself that exclaims "I am more than enough - and then some." While researching for another article I came across this quote about a past life in America involving some in business leadership then. It merits consideration: among many cruelties Convid reveals are the many inequities flourishing everywhere, which threaten everything: In 1927, Owen D. Young, a Greenwich resident who was the first chairman of General Electric, gave a speech at Harvard Business School, in which he scolded businessmen who devise ways and means to squeeze out of labor its last ounce effort and last penny of compensation. He encouraged them instead to think in terms of human beings-one group who put their capital in, and another group who put their lives and labor in a common enterprise for mutual advantage. Rick Wartzman, a longtime head of the Drucker Institute and a historian of corporate behaviour, told me, This really was beyond rhetoric. We were much more of a we culture than an I culture.
