Misconceptions Misconceptions of D/deafness and hearing loss are often caused by lack of awareness and understanding of the topic. By raising positive D/d...eaf awareness, sharing our experiences and educating others, we can work together to reduce negative stigma surrounding D/deafness, erase myths and misconceptions and make the world a more D/deaf friendly place Common misconceptions of D/deafness are... ‘D/deaf people can’t hear anything’ ‘D/deaf people can’t speak’ ‘All D/deaf people use sign language’ ‘Hearing technologies restore hearing’ ‘D/deafness only affects the older generation’ ‘D/deafness is hereditary’ Of course not! Every D/deaf person is different! There are many different levels of hearing loss ranging from mild to profound to complete loss, meaning we can all hear different things depending on the level of loss. Some have hearing loss in one ear, others in both ears. D/deaf people communicate in different ways from speech to sign language, other methods, or a mixture. British Sign Language (BSL) used by Deaf signers has a different grammatical structure to English. Some D/deaf people wear hearing technologies to help them hear, like hearing aids, cochlear implants, BAHAs and so on. These are assistive aids, they don’t magically restore or make you hearing again. Anyone can be D/deaf regardless of their age. Some are born with it, others lose it over time, through illness, noise induced or other reasons, some don’t know the cause. It’s not always hereditary. D/deafness is one of the most common disabilities, such a broad one, but the least understood. It’s just a part of who they are... it doesn’t define them! Remember, a little D/deaf awareness goes a long way to making the world a more accessible, inclusive and understanding place! #DeafAwarenessWeek www.instagram.com/p/B_0PhrVFK3Z/
