Is it cauliflower? Take another look! This is Lion's Mane Mushroom or Hericium Erinaceus! Our customers got some in their baskets this week. They are grown by our partners, Emily and Dave from Kendal Hills Farm who call them sneaky masters of deception. "That delicate, meaty texture - is it lobster? Crab? Can it really be a mushroom?! It has a sweet and mild taste, but with its porous nature, it disguises itself with surrounding flavours like a tasty little spy! ... Our family loves to slice this one up into quarter-inch thick "steaks", then dry-fry them to brown both sides, before adding garlic, butter, and onions and cooking until tender. However, these beauties also go great in sauces, stir-fries, stews, curries, and as a meat or tofu substitute in any of your favourite dishes! In the meantime, store them in your fridge in a paper bag for up to a week." We are so proud of this book based on our heritage-designated Trading Tree in our front garden in Georgina. This beautiful story, called "The Trading Tree / E Meshkwadooniged Mitig by Nancy Cooper, translations by Myrtle Jamieson, has beautiful illustrations by Heather Charles and is in both English and Ojibwe. We have butterflies and bees... and skunks and rabbits, Canadian geese and so many different kinds of birds all here at the farm. We recently planted the backfield with a buckwheat cover crop and it's now a more magical place! The wildlife has made this field come alive. Farming Fact, we planted the cover crop to help maintain the health and the nutrients levels of the soil in that field. As we continue to build healthier soil each year in our gardens, we have really notice...d our pest pressure has started to decrease. From time to time, though, our weekly food basket customers will get produce from us that has holes in it or has been nibbled on by bugs. It is still safe to eat, they just think what we are growing is very tasty too!

Tomatoes: Not long now! The first picture shows our Agri-preneurs on May 7th working on the tomatoes. The second was taken yesterday, 47 days later. Our farmers work as an amazing team on all our veggies inside the greenhouse and outside in the garden but Amanda (in the baseball hat) has become our 'Star Tomato Trelliser'. ... They are looking so beautiful right now largely due to her care and attention. Thank you Amanda and the whole farm team.
