Instead we did our best to kick off the holiday with a special surprise! Each employee was delivered a gift wrapped box to their home which contained a gift card to Farm Boy for Christmas dinner, two custom CJE engraved glasses, and a bottle of Bailey's. Our Special Projects group wanted to take this opportunity to highlight one of their proudest accomplishments this year - the collaboration with HOK in Ottawa on the Government of Canada’s co-working office in Orleans. This award-winning renovation of over 9,000 sq.ft. creates a modern and effective workplace alternative to Federal ...employees of all departments to allow them to work closer to home and was recently highlighted in Canadian Interiors. #TeamCJE provided the structural engineering services for this project including floor load assessments, opening reinforcing, and detailing for the restraint of partitions and ceilings including associated construction services work where required. Congratulations to CJE team member Krista Macwilliam who has just completed her BSS (Building Science Specialist) designation. This honour recognizes those who meet the educational and practical requirements set forth by the Building Science Specialist Board. Krista says, As the building industry has advanced over the last century and we’ve learned how to seal, insulate and condition our buildings, the need to understand the way a building functions as a dynamic system withi...n its environment became critical. Over the weekend, our very own Carleton University (Official) graduate of '96, Brian Johnson, presented a special message to the fall 2020 graduating Civil and Environmental class of Carleton U's Faculty of Engineering. With over 30 graduates this year, the ceremony wasn't quite what it would normally be with in-person celebrations on pause, but spirits were high and we're so excited to see how bright our future engineers are! Whether you're just starting out in your career, ...or 25 years in, Brian touched on many valuable topics in his speech. Today our Building Science Department is celebrating another successful milestone in a 2-year long underground parking garage restoration project in Ottawa. A collaboration with Bassi Construction, this stage of the project included the complete replacement of a 25,000sq.ft. section of a reinforced concrete parking deck along with new waterproofing. The project began with a full investigation and condition survey of the structure. Our #TEAM worked with the client during development of construction documentation for the structural repair including new waterproofing to protect the new slab. The project includes a full phasing plan, and is on schedule to be complete in 2021.

Today we celebrate another milestone for a member of the Cleland Jardine Engineering Limited family. Congratulations to Harry Hayes, P.Eng. on officially receiving his Professional Engineer designation from the PEO. Harry reflects what the core principles of #CJE are all about: a dedication to #team, creativity and excellence. From starting as a Carleton Engineering And Design Co-Op student in 2014, to becoming a Structural Designer, and now a full time Structural Engineer in the New Construction Department he is committed and cares about not only the clients he works with but to his fellow CJE family as well. Great to see the footings going in at 655-755 Anand Private Apartments, the site of a new 450,000sq.ft. mixed use development that will include two 17-storey apartment towers and a 3 level parking garage. When the footings are starting we know that the building structure is starting it's journey to completion. We are proud to be part of the #team building these towers along with Westview Projects, Jain, and Woodman Architect & Associates.

Being a #Team is about working together. After an assessment by our Building Science Department determined that this existing garage required extensive repair, they partnered with our Special Projects Department to design and detail the demolition and reconstruction of the building. This #collaboration with Osgoode Properties Ltd., Paterson Group Inc., and Jonas Building Restoration has only a few finishing touches left to go before it is back operational and looking better than ever.

Today the entire #CJE #TEAM congratulates Building Science Department member Rachel Gullage, EIT for successfully completing her Building Envelope Systems Exam. This is another step on her journey to gain her BSS designation from the Building Science Specialist Board of Canada (BSSB).

The exterior stud wall framing is almost complete for an addition to the Donnelly Fleet Repair and Collision Centre in Ottawa. The new 4,500sq.ft. addition to an existing 1980's building will greatly reduce customer wait times and increase the Centre's repair volume. A great project with our #TEAM-mates at S.J. Sometimes even the smallest of buildings need alternate solutions. At the Trail West Apartment Complex on Cope Road, the initial soils information required piled foundations which created construction costs that prevented the project from being viable. Through an #integrateddesign process the #CJE #TEAM worked with GEMTEC Consulting Engineers & Scientists Limited and M.D. Blakely Architects to modify the architectural & structural designs to eliminate the piles while still achieving the required building heights and total number of units. Cleland Jardine Engineering Ltd's TEAM Design approach always finds a way to help owners achieve their goals.

#Construction continues at the new Dymon Storage on McGarry Terrace in Barrhaven, Ontario. The new 150,000sq.ft. building with a steel frame and concrete cores will not only be home to Dymon's state of the art storage spaces, but also to a commercial/retail ground floor. Another great project from our New Construction #TEAM along with Laurin Group Construction, Nicholas Caragianis Architect Inc., and Goodkey, Weedmark & Associates Limited.

The Hôpital général de Hawkesbury & District General Hospital (HGH) is racing it's way towards the finish line. This MOHLTC project will provide 200,000sq.ft. of new and renovated spaces to serve the area and provide much needed healthcare for decades to come. The project completed with the #TEAM at DREDGE LAHEY Architects is scheduled for an early October opening and is looking fantastic. Nice work by our New Construction Department.

The steel is up and the envelope is going on Chatelain Avenue. This new 6,000sq.ft. pre-engineered building being erected by Dolyn Construction in collaboration with Steelway Building Systems will take the place of a building that was damaged by a fire a year ago. The new 19-storey apartment building at 192 Bronson Avenue in Ottawa continues it's journey towards completion. This new 192,000sq.ft. tower being constructed by Bassi Construction is starting to show off how it will blend in with the sky when it is complete. Cleland Jardine Engineering Ltd. is proud to be part of the #TEAM bringing this project to life.

Construction continues at Playfair Towers, a new 8-storey, 112,000sq.ft. apartment building which is being built on top of an existing 60,000sq.ft. concrete parking structure. This #TEAM collaboration with GreatWise Developments, Canam Steel Corporation, Goodkey Weedmark & Associates Ltd, and Roderick Lahey Architects will bring more much needed residential units to Ottawa's east end close to the LRT.

Construction Continues... The new 180,000sq.ft. Dymon Storage on Industrial Avenue continues it's march towards completion. The new 5-storey building designed with our #TEAM-mates at Nicholas Caragianis Architect Inc. will provide a new facility to help meet the ever growing demand for off-site storage in a world where the number of rental properties & apartments continues to rise. Construction continues.... Our #TEAM-mates at Orange Design Build continue to erect the steel framing for The Kensington Lofts Hintonburg located at 99 Pinhey in Ottawa. The new 4-storey, 30,000 sq.ft. apartment building has a steel super-structure that is a combination of steel brace frames and moment frames to maximize the glazing and deal with the site's non-orthogonal shape. Assessing the foundations of existing #heritagebuildings structures to determine how to rehabilitate them can sometimes be a dirty job....but our #BuildingScience Department is always willing to do it. While the group uses the latest in modern scanning technologies, sometimes a visual review is the best and most effective way of finding solutions.

An annual tradition, the Cleland Jardine Engineering Ltd. Lobsterfest refused to be stopped this past weekend. While the event may not have involved it's usual family camping trip, potluck dinner, fishing event, and campfire stories our founders Michael Cleland and Robert Jardine still found a way to make it happen with the first ever Lobsterfest-Parking-Lot-Drive-Thru-&-Pickup. As retail stores and businesses get set to re-open and we all prepare for what the new normal might look like, Cleland Jardine Engineering Ltd. Special Projects #TEAM is working with Raw Glass Inc. (Carleton Place), a local glass contractor, to develop semi permanent and portable laminated glass guards. These new guards are being designed such that they do not require any mechanical fasteners and can be installed at reception desks or any other horizontal surface where physical distancing is required. As we start our journey to our next #thenewnormal we are proud to be a part of this initiative.

Project continues to look amazing Linebox Studio!!!

Last week, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute officially opened it's doors with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Cleland Jardine Engineering Ltd. was there in attendance with our project #TEAM-mates from HDR, PCL Construction, the UOHI, and The Ottawa Hospital - L'Hôpital d'Ottawa. #CJE works on a wide variety of projects with various magnitudes of scope. All of those projects make a difference to the communities that these structures are constructed in, however, we take even more pride when these projects become part of saving lives. Congratulations to the entire Team on completing and opening this truly state-of-the-art building.

The revitalization of the The Regional Group's Hazeldean Mall continues in Kanata. Working with our #TEAM-mates from Figurr collectif d'architectes and VCL Construction this renovation of over 50,000 sq. ft. of retail space will provide a new home for one of the mall's retail partners. Cleland Jardine Engineering Ltd.'s Special Projects group has extensive experience in the renovation of existing buildings and is a leader at providing creative and cost effective structural solutions for our project partners.

Construction continues.... Despite the snow, the glulam and steel framing which forms the roof of the atrium at the Hôpital Montfort Orleans Health Hub is well underway. The project which was designed along with our #TEAM-mates at HDR Ottawa, exp, and Smith & Anderson is being constructed by an amazing team from the EllisDon Corporation.

The #CJE Fishing Club has been taking the #TEAM out of the boardroom and onto the water for 13 years. The Club recently celebrated the 2019 season by awarding this year's master anglers at our annual banquet (held in Harry Hayes' unheated garage). Congrats to Adam Corbin for Biggest Bass, Spencer Pye for most Monthly Wins, and our Master Baiter of the year, Mike Eppich!
