Positive reinforcement isnt just about food. Its about smart use of available reinforcers. Use them wisely!

If youve had your dog for a long time and the dislike of petting is a new phenomenon, pain due to undiagnosed illness or injury could be the likely culprit. In this case, a trip to your veterinarian is in order to rule out a painful condition. If, however, your dog has always been rather cuddle-averse, it could simply be that its just his personality. Just as humans vary in their level of fondness for personal touch and affection, dogs, too, may desire varying levels of phy...sical touch. If your dog is a rescue pooch, also consider that past abuse may have made him fearful of human hands. For dogs that like to be petted sometimes but not others, consider the way youre initiating contact. In one study of 28 dogs who were petted in nine different ways, most of the dogs showed signs of being uncomfortable when petted on the top of the head or paw. The dogs also showed signs of stress, such as elevated heart rates, when they were held while lying on the ground, held by the collar or had their muzzle covered. "The dogs behavioral and physiological responses suggest that some common physical human-dog interactions are perceived as unpleasant by dogs", the researchers explained, which means that if your dog avoids being petted it could be because he doesnt like the way youre petting him. On the other hand, scratches at the base of the tail, shoulder and chest were well-enjoyed and tolerated by most dogs. How can you tell how your dog likes to be pet? Learn to pay attention to his body language and other signals.

Some dogs, like people, are more sensitive to the mental and physical manifestations of stress than others. What might cause sickness in one dog will have no effect on another even when both dogs are exposed to the same stressors.

We had a blast at the SDKC CKC Trial with Stephanie and Bronner! We earned or JT Title (Jumps and Tunnels) We finished the weekend with 8 out of 13 Qs towards our Novice PAD Standard and Jumpers titles. Pretty happy with the results of our first outdoor trial ever, plus not trialing for over 9 months!

The three key factors for management are: to keep dogs, humans and other animals safe; to make sure the dogs needs are met by using enrichment; and to prevent the reinforcement of undesirable behaviours.

What is "resource guarding"? Resource guarding is when a dog controls access to food, objects, people and locations that are important to him through defensive body language or overt aggressive display.

Dogs will send signals through their body language that they want to be left alone, but to humans, unless you know what you are looking for, these signals will be subtle and most probably missed. Todays dog park culture means that a lot of owners believe that their dog must play with as many other dogs as possible to have a fulfilling life, so many dogs are often not taught to take notice of body language either and see every other dog as a potential playmate.
