What you take in to your mind affects you just as much as what you take into your body. Just as we are supposed to eat healthy, we must also read healthy. Last year, I read two books that really helped me understand the gospel and how it intersects with our messy, sinful, flawed lives. Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy: You don't have to pretend like everything is ok. God knows it isn't.... Gentle and Lowly: And on top of this...God's not just "putting up with you" even though you're not okay. God knows that you're not okay & He loves you like crazy anyway.

Most of the medicines of the world have the same two attributes (if they are good medicines, that is). They taste awful, and they work. There is even a cough syrup brand that has this as their motto. But the ultimate medicine, the ultimate cure for the difficulties of this world is not a bitter medicine, but a wonderfully sweet one: JOY. What is one of the most important attributes of the church? Some might say that it is loving. Others might speak of the holiness, the purity of the doctrine in the church. But there is another attribute that usually gets left aside because it is so difficult to achieve. We think that it is a lost cause here on this earth. The attribute of UNITY.... But Scripture commands unity of the body of Christ. For the church to work together, standing firm in one spirit, with one mind, striving side by side for the faith of the gospel. It seems impossible, but we are given the secret to unity in Philippians chapter 2. On Sunday afternoon, we looked at the doctrine of the Lord's Supper, also known as Communion. Communion with the past, communion with our God, and communion with each other. We truly long for the day when we can fully share communion once more together as the church, and we long for the day when we throw our doors wide open and welcome everyone in. This year, we celebrated Christmas in a bit of a different way.
