Cloverdale United Church 19.03.2021

Join us for Ash Wednesday service tomorrow at 7 pm, as we open the door to the season of Lent. This year we will mark our foreheads (or hands) with water or oil at home, as we continue to observe holy traditions in a new way. Ashes are a sign of mourning and repentance, and we have done a lot of grieving in the past few months, over a way of life that has been postponed, over the loss of loved ones and the inability to make contact with others. So, on Wednesday, we will loo...k to the future and God’s promise, and be marked with oil for holiness, or water for cleansing. We will think about some of the themes of Lent: repentance and life changes, generosity and kindness, reconciliation and connections, fasting and justice. We will have a prayer of confession, brief Scripture readings, a time to contemplate, and end with the symbols we have chosen to mark our faith. Please have a small dish with water or oil, a pencil and paper, and maybe some crayons or felts if children want to participate. The service will take about half an hour, to bring blessing and strength as we begin the Lenten journey. * ZOOM LINK WILL BE THE SAME AS SUNDAY SERVICES. *

Come and join your church family for a community meal on Zoom! Traditionally a meal of pancakes and other breakfast-ey foods, you are welcome to make and bring whatever suits your fancy. We’ll join together for some community mealtime before playing a game or two. Join us tonight, February 16 at 5:30 PM on Zoom to connect with your people! (Pajamas welcome. We are not here to judge.) Contact the church office or Robyn for the Zoom link, if you don't have it yet!

I know we're tired of the restrictions in place because of the COVID-19 epidemic. Truly, I get it. I'm missing the face-to-face connections with people outside ...of my household. I'm missing singing in community. I'm missing feeling the wind on my face when I walk outside. (Yes, even as someone who sports a pretty full beard, I'm used to that sensation, especially in the fall and winter.) I want to leave my mask in the house, and head to church, knowing that a group of us will be going to a restaurant for lunch, later. Or to take a trip to see my family, back in Ontario. But the SARS-COV-2 virus is a constant factory, one that doesn't take a break, even though we're tired of it. For folks living in areas where there haven't been cases, my hope is that your community will be spared. I hope you'll keep listening to the health authorities, and following their guidance - doing all you can to keep your community safe. For those of us living in areas where infections are on the rise, it becomes even more important that we listen to the directives and the guidance given to us by our health authorities. Let's not try to figure out how to skirt the rules. Let's live into the spirit, as well as the letter, of the law. As researchers move closer to a vaccine, we need to keep working to support our neighbours, and keep our medical system from being overwhelmed. Let's take care of one another. Washing hands. Maintaining minimum 2 meters physical distance. Wearing masks as directed. Following the guidance of the public health authorities in our area on how we can (and cannot) gather. Loving our neighbours as we love ourselves.

Make sure you check your bulletin this week and for the next few weeks to check out our new feature: . Each week we will be featuring a recipe from the Cloverdale Hazelmere Pastoral Charge cookbook, created in 2004. This week’s recipes are very special. They actually come from the Gladwin Heights United Church Cookbook from 2000. One from Robyn Green (now Garland) and one from Margaret Henderson, who would move to Cloverdale in 2009.
