Yesterday, Victoria celebrated her birthday! We were shared this wonderful story from her support staff! While she was in the driveway, a truck drove by and honked... A few minutes later a man and his two girls stopped in and gave her a birthday present out of the kindness of their hearts! This is inclusion. someone’s sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago. Today we honour and recognize the Community Living movement beginning in the 1950s. We are thankful and indebted to those who came before us. For the self-advocates and parents who created shade for those that live with developmental disabilities today through their advocacy, activism and perseverance. Because of them, we are able to celebrate Community Living Month with thousands of p...eople across the province. We celebrate that those with developmental disabilities can today live lives in the shade lives of their choosing, of comfort in their communities with their friends and families, where they belong and where their strengths, gifts, talents and abilities are recognized and appreciated. Today we celebrate and honour our many Community Partners, such as Ryan Wilson of Silver Creek Landscaping and the Seaforth Optimist Club who’s community mindedness and generosity create shade for their neighbours. Thank you to our Community Living Month Committee who’s efforts towards education regarding the power and importance of inclusion plant shade for the next generation May this tree serve as a reminder of where we came from and where we are going.
