With high winds we have seen a lot of downed powerlines. Please remember to stay at least 33 feet or 10 meters away from any downed lines. DO NOT ASSUME ITS A DEAD LINE. If for any reason you find yourself within 10 meters of a downed line, "shuffle step" (small movements without lifting your feet off the ground, move slow, don't panic, DO NOT lift your foot off the ground to take a step). This is not meant to be a safe way to pass a downed line, its only in the event that you find yourself in an emergency situation where a line has come down near you. Please report any downed line to 911. BC Hydro has some safety tips on their website: https://www.bchydro.com//electrical-sa/safe-distance.html.

On this unique Remembrance Day, we thank those who have fallen in our own unique ways. CLVFD members honour CAF veterans and fallen heroes by enjoying what we hold most dear: our homes, our families and our local community. Lest We Forget in everything we enjoy. A heavy price already paid.

230 firefighters, mostly from BC, and 40-50 supervisors/tech experts are battling fires in Oregon following their dispatch this Friday. During political times, hands-on hardworking first responders like these put it in perspective. No motivation other than to saves lives, homes and livelihoods.. Get home safe ladies and gents.

Photos from a recent Saturday morning fire practice for Cluculz Lake Volunteer Fire Department members. This was a mock scenario with a vehicle fire behind the Community Center. Members regularly practice skills such as: Incident Command, Firefighter accountability, pump operations, deploying and operating hand lines, hazard safety, and many other skills that allow us to safely extinguish fires and mitigate hazards.

CLVFD member received a fill today with more booked for residents of Cluculz Lake tomorrow. All 6 totes filled in a single pass! Having on-site water storage may allow firefighters to continuously battle a blaze for a longer period of time. Whilst we maintain 2 working trucks to assist with a continuous water supply, rural fire departments are always faced with the added pressure of managing access to water in the absence of mains fed fire hydrants like those found on city st...reet corners. Having water storage for this purpose at home can assist us in keeping the pressure on a more significant blaze. The goal of course is to mitigate property damage and control the spread once residents safety has been secured. Depending on the type of fire suppression system or water storage you have, it may be a good idea to keep your tank(s) or totes away from your residence, outbuildings and firewood storage (pictured totes stand 100ft away from the main structures). Although many of us collect rain water from roof drainage/gutter systems, water stored immediately next to a house MAY be difficult or dangerous to access depending on the magnitude of the fire or it's location. Lumber, siding and other materials that typically make up our various structures can burn at incredibly high temperatures making if difficult to reach even in full firefighting attire (turnout gear). Plastic totes such as these may even rupture if positioned too close to the fuel source i.e. the fire. Having said that, if this is your only option at present, it's still vastly better than no water storage at all. Other purpose built and designed systems may have different requirements so always be sure to check your manufacturer or designer specifications. Where you make improvements to your suppression system, remember to update your insurance company. A great start to protecting your home is to take advantage of the free FireSmart home assessment. Contact CLVFD to schedule a water delivery.

During an emergency it is important that residents have access to reliable, timely, and accurate information to ensure their own safety and that of their family and loved ones. In response to this need, the communities of Bulkley Nechako have chosen Voyent Alert! as the communication service provider for these kinds of events. Voyent Alert! is a multi-purpose communication service used to send alerts to residents, businesses, and visitors during critical events like fires or floods as well as for relevant day-to-day communications such as public works maintenance, snow removal advisories, etc.
