Health tip provided by Dr. Harriss PMT, South Riverdale Clinic Are you getting enough exercise? The average Canadian adult requires 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity exercise every week in bouts of 10 minutes or more. Activities like walking, biking, jogging and swimming can significantly decrease your risk of cardiovascular incident, diabetes and obesity while greatly improving your quality of life. Even two ten minute sessions per day can make all the difference. Get moving everyone! http://csep.ca/C/Guidelines/CSEP_PAGuidelines_adults_en.pdf

Health Tip provided by: Dr. Lishchynas PMT, Bronte Clinic Skip the dog walker ...walk your best friend yourself! BENEFITS TO YOU: We all know walking 30 minutes a day, 3 times per week is beneficial for your health. Walking daily with your pet is even better! ... According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 30 minutes of walking your dog daily can decrease your risk of breast cancer (by 75%), diabetes (by 49%), heart disease (by 35%) and colon cancer (by 22%). Isnt that great news?! Dogs not only have a physical therapeutic effect on their owners but also a positive psychological/emotional effect! According to a study published in the Journal of Behavioural Medicine (2014), the presence of a dog lowers your stress hormones and heart rate. In addition, you can expand your social circle by befriending other dog owners in your community and thus improving social supports. (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 2011). Although dogs often enjoy a fun play session at the leash free park, it does not have as many physical health benefits for the owner. So take a longer walking route to your neighbourhood dog park or switch it up and spend more time walking together rather than watching your pet run around without you. BENEFITS TO YOUR DOG: *Reduces negative behaviours such as hyperactivity and destructive behaviours (eg. chewing up your shoes sound familiar?) *Weight control for your pet (dogs at a healthy weight have less stress on their spine and joints) *Promotes a strong bond between owner and canine companion *Decreases amount of barking (your neighbours will thank you) *Research also says that any size of dog has therapeutic benefit for you however owners of small dogs should resist carrying their dogs on their walks because your pooch is missing out. Smaller dogs tend to stop walking around 10 minutes but should be encouraged to walk a few more minutes to increase their cardiovascular health (Caution: do not do this when it is too hot or too cold outside).

We asked Participants from the early years of the Bike Rally to tell us about their experiences and the impact of riding and fundraising. This is one perspectiv...e: "In the dark of winter 2002, a fella I was dating asked if I would join him on a cycling fundraiser to Montreal as part of the food crew. I ended up marrying the guy, spending three years on Road Safety, and then made the big switch to Rider for eight more years. My Bike Rally community, developed over 12 years, continues to be an enormous part of my life. The humbling joy of crossing the finish line in Montral and being able to financially contribute to the lifeblood of PWA continue to be some of the proudest moments of my life." -Geoffrey Chown, Year 4 Crew and 12-Time Participant

Bike Rally Intern: Samantha Bauer My name is Samantha Bauer and I am currently starting my clinical internship with Dr. Matthew Barrigar at Anishnawbe Health Toronto. I consider myself an ambitious, compassionate individual, and am excited to be part of the CMCC Wellness Crew for the Friends for Life Bike Rally. In the future I plan to practice in an isolated community in Northwestern Ontario, which unfortunately does not receive healthcare services comparable to larger commu...nities. The Aboriginal population is a large demographic within Northwestern Ontario where HIV/AIDS is considered a rising concern on reserves due to lack of resources and education. The bike rally will provide me with further education, resources, and understanding of the day-to-day struggles of HIV positive persons, and the capacity to confidently and effectively reach out to this population in my own community - where healthcare is often lacking. Being a part of the Wellness Crew will allow me to gain deepened understanding of this population and how chiropractic can be integrated into their support system. I look forward to this exciting opportunity. See more

I consider myself an enthusiastic, kind-hearted and friendly individual and am very excited at the opportunity of being involved with the Friends for Life Bike Rally to help these amazing riders achieve their goals. Being involved in sports all my life, I am very interested in working with athletes in the future. I hope to u...se this experience to help shape my personal and professional development. The Bike Rally is about more than 600km ride, its about promoting awareness about HIV/AIDs and helping PWA Toronto fundraise money so they can continue to make a difference in the lives of its members. I look forward to being a part of the wellness crew, and providing the riders with support and care they need throughout their journey. See more

I am very excited to be a part of the chiropractic intern team providing treatment to the riders and volunteers on the Friends for Life Bike Rally. Working with People with AIDS Toronto and the Bike Rally is incredibly important to me as enhancing the quality of life of those affected by HIV/AIDS is... something I am truly passionate about. I am very excited to give back to the community and be able to do my part in the wonderful work PWA does in the HIV community every single day. I am also looking forward to honing my chiropractic skills, and learning about and treating the musculoskeletal manifestations of HIV/AIDS. I look forward to taking all that I learn and bring it back to the CMCC community and the community at large. See more

Bike Rally Intern: Carly Mattson My name is Carly Mattson and I am currently doing my clinical internship with Dr. Scott Howitt at St. Johns Rehabilitation Hospital. I consider myself a compassionate, enthusiastic and adventurous person. I am extremely excited to be involved with the Friends for Life Bike Rally, providing treatment to the riders and other volunteers. Last summer I volunteered with World Spine Care in Botswana, Africa. I had the opportunity to work closely wi...th individuals, who are living with serious illnesses and diseases, including HIV and AIDS. I have seen how HIV and AIDS affects individuals both mentally and physically, and would like to learn more about helping manage these physical symptoms. As an active person, who has always been involved in sport, I am looking forward to learning more about biking injuries and how to treat them. My goal is to make their long ride a little more comfortable. I look forward to being apart of this experience, and being involved in an important cause with a strong message. See more
