Working Stronger is proud to present the session Bill 47: Reducing Psychological Health and Safety to Red Tape presented by Sharon A. Roberts. Alberta’s UCP government passed Bill 47 during the pandemic in 2020. It rewrites the province’s Occupational Health and Safety Act and amends its Workers’ Compensation Act. Among other things, the changes reduce protections for psychological health and safety under the pretense of reducing red tape. Sharon highlights some of these... key changes. She also makes a case for employers and workers alike to continue championing mental wellness at work, including with the use of surviving legal tools to promote and enforce psychological health and safety obligations in Alberta workplaces. "So many of the things that perhaps we took for granted before that contribute to our mental health have disappeared. So the social connection with family and friends, the connections we experience through work, a reliable income, things like this," said CMHA national CEO Margaret Eaton. An annual vigil for those who have died by suicide was held online last Sunday. Andy Jones, who lost his son Louis, said, "It always helps to talk to other people. And to celebrate the lives of the people that we lost to suicide. It's also very helpful to have something like this at Christmas time, which is always a hard time of year," said Jones. https://buff.ly/2LAw1Ah
