Lehman’s Bay & Lehman’s Landing are named after the Abraham Lehman family. Abraham and his wife, Annie Long Yake, came to the Manitoulin around 1877, with a family of seven children and one on the way. After arriving at Manitowaning, they came across Lake Manitou to settle on a bush farm about 2 1/2 miles from the lake. They cleared about 20 acres of heavy bush and realized that the land was too shallow to produce good crops. So they took up better land, on the shores of Lak...e Manitou (where Lehman’s Landing is located). This was the location of the first Post Office in the area and Abe served as Postmaster from 1880 to 1892. Lehman’s Landing is the place where boats landed in pioneer days, after sailing up the lake with goods and passengers from Manitowaning. Abe had a sail boat made, perhaps by Mr. Budge, and Abe ran weekly trips to the east end for the convenience of Carnarvon settlers and others who had to go to Manitowaning, the only place at that time for shopping or trading. In 1900, the Lehmans moved to Manitowaning. Sources: A Time to Remember, Exploring Manitoulin, Manitoulin Genealogy Website. Members of the Williamson Family at Lehman’s Landing. Due to many requests, the Central Manitoulin Historical Society has reprinted their popular cookbook, Pioneer Recipes & Memories, first printed in 2004. Besides the many delicious recipes, the book also contains many interesting historical tidbits, helpful household hints, and pioneer home remedies & patent medicines. As an added bonus, it also includes genealogical information about these early settlers of Central Manitoulin. This wonderful cookbook can be purchased for $20.00 from members of the Central Manitoulin Historical Society or by contacting our President, Ted Taylor at 705-377-5649. This cookbook would make a great Easter or Mother’s Day gift!

Do you recognize anyone in this picture? This photo is from Alice Dewar Pennie and was found in her mother's (Maud's)album. She thinks her grandmother, Alice Cooper, is the one with the bow. Alice Cooper was the daughter of John Perkins Cooper & Elizabeth Whitmore Bennett and she married James Edmund Hopkin. Can you help identify the other women in the picture? Are they her sisters?
