Hydrogen as a fuel is an attractive solution due to its energy density and zero emissions when consumed. When hydrogen and oxygen are combined in a fuel cell, heat, electricity, and water vapor are created. Mobile and stationary fuel cells are currently being used in various applications, including buses, data centres, submarines, and hospitals. Hydrogen also has approximately three times the energy density of natural gas, gasoline or diesel. Using current hydrogen fuel cells, a trucker could travel approximately 480 KM on a tank that takes 3-5 minutes to fill. This is close to double the distance that current electric trucks can travel, with less refuelling time than it would take to change or charge batteries. Hydrogen is known as an energy carrier because it cannot be found on its own in nature and is instead produced from other sources of energy. There are three types of hydrogen.
