The Canadian Maneuver Training Center's Contemporary Operating Environment Force, or COEFOR, conducted Exercise Frozen Spartan from February 1st to February 5th, 2021. COEFOR conducted Winter warfare operations, day and night navigation and conducted reconnaissance patrols in order to hone their soldering skills. As Canada entered late summer, the Contemporary Operating Environment Force (COEFOR) returned from leave and hit the ground running, meeting the challenges of operating in a COVID environment while maintaining the high level of performance typically shown by COEFOR. Early in August, four members of COEFOR had the opportunity to attend the Basic Infantry Machine Gun, where they learned to operate the C6 machine gun on the tripod. COEFOR sent 7 members to Latvia as a part of Op...eration Reassurance, to assist with work around Camp Adazi. The soldiers returned from Latvia in October. Additionally, several members attended the air brake course, a course useful both within the military and, if a member wishes, after re-entering the civilian world. COEFOR conducts the EXERCISE SPARTAN READY annually, but it changes every year reflecting the constantly changing nature of COEFOR’s mission, which is to be an exact copy of Canada's potential adversaries against which the Canadian Military can train, and set COEFOR’s Standard Operating Procedure's (SOP) for Ex MAPLE RESOLVE, Canada’s premier collective training exercise. During Ex SPARTAN READY, COEFOR simulated insurgent activity such as kidnappings and the use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) to better represent the potential adversaries of Canada, maintain and improve the quality of training. As 2020 wound down, COEFOR took advantage of the season’s early snow to teach a snowmobile course. During the course, members learned to operate the Light Over Snow Vehicle (LOSV) during both day and night even when driving over rough terrain. COEFOR also qualified its members to act as an Observer Controller Training (OCT), which allows the members to act as referees during exercise, a qualification that will enable the members of COEFOR to ensure the smooth running of exercises, and interoperability within CMTC. COEFOR closed out the year having achieved all that was asked of it, and then some; all of it thanks to the hard work and professionalism of the members and leadership within COEFOR. From 4 to 20 November 2020, 1 CMBG conducted Ex VIRTUAL RAM 20 at 3 CDSG Edmonton, a Computer Assisted Exercise (CAX) to prepare 1 CMBG HQ staff for upcoming exercises. CMTC deployed a group of nine Observer Controller Trainers (OCT) to assist with the training. OCT are experienced officers and Sr NCOs who provide observation, mentorship and report on collective training events to the Canadian Army Doctrine and Training Command (CADTC). The CAX was enabled by 3rd Canadian Div...ision HQ, the division Simulation Centre and elements of the Combat Support Group from Kingston, Ontario. The exercise consisted of two operational planning cycles, one for the offence and one for the defence. 1 CMBG were able to conduct two iterations of the defensive battle and one of the offence. All 1 CMBG units provided the lower control to ensure the Brigade HQ could exercise the majority of the brigade functions. CMTC OCTs concentrated on the Planning, Intelligence, Engineering, and Fires functions of the Brigade HQ. Ex VIRTUAL RAM provided 1 CMBG HQ with a valuable learning opportunity in a safe environment despite COVID-19. Throughout the exercise, under the mentorship of the brigade commander, Col Rutland, the brigade headquarters significantly improved their planning and battle management. This exercise has set the conditions for future success of 1 CMBG and their units on Exercise UNIFIED RESOLVE, and MAPLE RESOLVE.

INTEGRATED CAPSTONE EXERCISE 20-02 was the exercise for the Enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group Latvia to integrate with the Latvian Mechanised Infantry Brigade. The exercise involved 10 nations and was held at Camp Adazi, Latvia from 25 Sep - 1 Oct 2020. L’exercice d’integration des bases essentielles 20-02 était l'exercice pour le groupement tactique de présence avancée rehaussée Lettonie à intégrer à la brigade d'infanterie mécanisée lettone. L'exercice a impliqué 10 pays et s'est tenu au Camp Adazi, en Lettonie, du 25 septembre au 1er octobre 2020.
