Something important that often gets left out of articles about elder abuse: "If you are concerned and believe you are spotting any of these signs [of elder abuse], call and visit as often as you can. Being present for the potentially abused senior can help you gain their trust and see their living conditions firsthand. If the elder does not want your help, accept their boundary but continue checking in with them. It can help to know they aren’t going through the situation al...one and that they have allies and people who care about their well-being." Kudos to Burnaby NOW for recently publishing great pieces focused on older people and their wellbeing, in long term care and in the community alike. https://www.burnabynow.com//opinion-old-age-is-not-a-crime

This week (Nov 16- 20) is #BullyingAwarenessWeek. When people think about bullying, they usually think of children and teenagers, but bullying affects older people too. There are resources out there to help you recognize the signs, understand the roots, learn how to react and where to seek help.... Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario has a great anti-bullying toolkit (http://www.eapon.ca/in-the-news/bullying-research-project/). In early 2020, A & O: Support Services for Older Adults and CNPEA developed a factsheet to outline causes, impacts, prevention strategies and local supports in #Manitoba to address this issue. https://bit.ly/35BgTdq. Bullying is not ok, at any age. Building a supportive community environment, where people are comfortable identifying and challenging bullying behaviours, is vital to the overall health and quality of life for older Canadians.

CNPEA has joined the Canada Cares campaign calling for a federal 1:1 matching fund to double the impact of your donations and help charities like ours survive COVID-19. The charitable sector employs 10% of the Canadian workforce, 1.5 million Canadians full-time. This year especially, charities have provided invaluable support and services to Canadians through the pandemic, while stretched beyond measure. For many, donations have taken a nosedive (understandably so). This campaign aims to ensure that the charitable industry can survive #COVID19. We know that Canadians are generous and care about their neighbours - but they cannot take on this challenge alone. Learn more and join the campaign: http://CanadaCaresCampaign.ca

If you missed the Office of the Seniors Advocate's press release earlier today, you can still watch it on Facebook (below). Isobel Mackenzie summarized a new report "Staying Apart to Stay Safe: The Impact of Visit Restrictions on Long-Term Care and Assisted Living Survey". The report was developed after running a 5 week survey at the end of summer 2020. Over 13,000 responses from residents, resident’s family members and friends, and the general public were received and analy...zed. Key takeaway: Residents and their families are supportive of COVID-19 prevention measures but need longer and more frequent visits. One 30 minute/week visit is not enough, and deeply affects the quality of life, mental and overall health of residents (and their loved ones). The goal of long term care is to provide quality of life in later days. Keeping people covid-free is important, but the cost of depriving them of social interactions with their loved ones is too high and just as tragic. Designated visitors need more time, and increasing the number of family members who can visit should also be a priority. The Seniors Advocate also pointed out that there is no effective structure in place to harness the collective voice of BC families & residents yet, which is equally frustrating and traumatizing for them, as they feel they aren't being heard during this crisis. Today, the Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments (OBSI) released their new report on Income and Canadian Financial Consumer Complaints - https://bit.ly/3kGL3kH. A few days ahead of Financial Literacy Month, their key findings confirm older Canadians' great need for accessible dispute resolution and support when encountering fraud, an investment issue, or a conflict with a financial service provider. Among the report's key findings: ... - Lower income households represent almost 40% of cases - Most lower-income complainants are women over 60 - Investment suitability is the most common investment-related issue for lower-income complainants. - Fraud is the most common banking issue for lower-income complainants. #FLM2020 If you would like to learn more about OBSI, what they can do for you, and how you can protect yourself and your finances, join us for a special webinar on November 26 at 10 AM Pacific / 1PM Eastern.
