Earlier today, McMaster University announced that they would be delaying the class start date for all faculties with the exception of Health Science Programs. Seeing that this encompasses the Nursing faculty, a lot of disappointment and frustration was brought forth by a number of students from all levels, sites and streams. Your CNSA delegates from all 3 sites met and discussed the issue at hand with Dr. Joanna Pierazzo, the Assistant Dean of the Undergraduate Nursing Progra...ms. We would like to share some of the points that were made in hopes of clarifying some of the miscommunication. The statement put out by McMaster University stated that classes will be delayed by one week and will begin on Monday January 11th rather than Monday January 4th. It is important to note that classes were originally set to start back up Wednesday January 6th, indicating that this winter break extension was by 3 days and not a full week. The statement also failed to mention that with this delay in the start date also comes the extension of the class term. So, students that will be starting classes Monday January 11th will no longer be ending their classes on Friday April 9th but rather on Wednesday April 14th, with final exams starting Thursday April 15th. This DOES NOT apply to us Nursing students. We will start classes back up on the original date (Wednesday January 6th) but will end on the original set date (Friday April 9th). This gives students 6 days before the exam period starts vs the 1 day other programs now have. Many factors were taken into consideration about not changing our winter term start date. Given that we are in a program that has clinical placements, the Faculty did not want to risk placements being cancelled nor cutting of hours short for those that should be starting back up that first week. Seeing that we do not know what this Winter semester holds (weather wise and COVID wise), they wanted to ensure that students are able to maximize their clinical hours. For students that are to have clinical labs that first week back, these have been booked months in advance and is not something that can easily be changed/re-booked as we share lab time with various other health programs. Each level and stream was carefully taken into consideration and it was concluded that this decision was the best choice for the program as a whole. If you have any further questions, comments or concerns please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
