Clinical Nurse Specialist of Manitoba 23.02.2021

Recently the WRHA Clinical Nurse Specialists were informed that we would be placed into a new reporting format outside the program where we have been hired into as part of the Provincial Health Transformation work that continues to be ongoing in Manitoba. For the majority the feedback on this announcement has been concerning as all Advanced Practice Nurses inclusive of the NP, CNS and Educator roles will be placed into a "bucket" or "pot" for reporting. This would lead one t...o believe that the powers that be do not have a full grasp of the scope and practice of these roles. Given the lack of any concrete information from this announcement and while all working to respond to an astonishing and terrifying second wave of Covid feelings of uncertainty have been high. In response, a colleague Janice Nesbitt, who works as a CNS with the WRHA Palliative Care Program developed an educational session for the Palliative Care Team to share our roles, value and expertise to increase the appreciation of this role that has often been described as a behind the scenes type of practice. She developed a presentation from a literature that shows what a dynamic and active position the CNS holds. Please check out our blog at CNSMB.ca to read her one page summary - you may find it useful in your own practice. For myself, it provided a much needed evidence and validation of my ongoing work. It was sorely needed and my thanks to her for the amount of time and effort that went into her presentation. So, please read and appreciate the CNS. A big thanks and Kudos to Janice, a friend, colleague and mentor. Wishing you all well, be safe.
