Public health officials have long advised we eat more veg, fruit, legumes, and whole grains. But these recommendations have come under fire for not working. Bec...ause, collectively, we’ve gotten fatter despite them. The argument from certain camps: It’s the fault of these foods. Is that the case, though? Or is it because people are eating other (ultra-processed, hyper-palatable) foods instead? If that sounds like a loaded question, here’s why: According to NHANES data, 58.5 percent of all calories consumed in the US come from ultra-processed foods. Our consumption habits aren’t improving: During the five-year survey period, that percentage increased by one percent every year. But let’s take a closer look at the recommended health foods: fruit, veg, legumes, whole grain. Notice how most folks, throughout their life cycle, tend to eat far less from each category vs. the recommendation. If you combine these data with the data I shared a few weeks back re: a) the top 10 sources of calories in America and b) the decline of movement over the last 100 years, the picture becomes clear. Movement is way down, calories are way up, calorie sources are skewed toward ultra processed foods, and the general advice for "healthy eating" isn't working all that well for most of the population. For more on this state of affairs (and what to do about it), check out Precision Nutrition's recent article: Fat loss hacks!?!? 10 charts show why you don’t need them.

It’s been a tough few weeks to say the least with the closure of in-person group fitness classes. I’m working hard to pivot my services so I can keep my new business afloat despite this global pandemic. Funnily enough I drew this card today on my Sunday walk. I am strong and I am flexible and I can do this! Watch this space for all the new things 2021 has to offer

Hey friends, I hope everyone is doing well! I am getting used to Willow being in school and Meadow being in daycare a couple half days a week, which means I hav...e time to write this post! I just wanted to give an update on all of my classes that will be beginning new series's in November. For Prenatal Yoga I will be teaching at the HUB at Cowichan Station on Thursday evenings and Oxygen Yoga & Fitness Westshore on Sunday afternoons. I will also have 2 evening Vinyasa classes running at the HUB! A Monday series (starts Nov.9) and a Thursday series (starts Nov.5). All classes are preregistered. If you'd like more info, the links are in my bio. Drop me a line if you have any questions or want to know more about any of the classes. You can also see more details of the classes at www.dianebarryoga.ca

WHAT TO DO WHEN STAYING IN SHAPE FEELS HARDER THAN EVER. // Link in bio. At the start of 2020, many of us had several anchor habits (something you do every day...without thinking about it) that functioned like the first domino in a series. Once that one domino tipped over, many other dominoes fell right after it, without much effort or thinking. For example, you used to: * set an alarm for 7 a.m. every day (first domino). Then you woke up and... * brush your teeth (second domino) * feed your dog/ cat (third domino) * listen to your 5-minute meditation app (fourth domino) * eat your breakfast (fifth domino) * and head out the door for work/ school (sixth domino). But now? There may be no work or school to go to, so you're not setting an alarm. And without that first domino, your 5-minute meditations? It's also not happening. If your system has been disrupted and you haven't quite found your new "normal", that's ok. Take your time. When you're ready, willing and able to build your new system, use this visual as a guide to help you establish your new anchor habits.
