As a champion over thinker, I enjoyed this post. One of the things I do and recommend to coaching clients is time-boxing the amount of time you allow yourself to fret ... #overthinking #leadership #awareness #rumination #analyzing #resilience https://hbr.org/2021/02/how-to-stop-overthinking-everything

With gyms requiring masks during exercise (ugh), I've taken to walking every day, even when it's minus 25 C or colder with the wind chill. I bundle up and listen to audio books or just think. It feels good to be outside #walking #exercise #COVID #selfcare #leadership #youhaveabody https://hbr.org//02/dont-underestimate-the-power-of-a-walk

May we let go, and grow bright as stars in a clear, frosty night, the more we are stripped of what we thought we could not do without. BR. DAVID STEINDL-RAST Photo by Ben Canales @bcstartrail ... Many of us feel stripped of so many things - routines, face-to-face connection, travel - during these strange times. I wear the same four things every week: jeans, pjs, a couple of tops. I wonder why I wanted so much clothing. (And shoes!) I look in my closet and it overwhelms me. All I want is books and time to think and write, interesting work, cooking, time with my husband, all of which I have in abundance. My stripped-down life is here to stay. #COVID #pandemic #peace #innerpeace #needvswant #stars #night #essentialism #snow #innerlife #hireyourhigherself

When coaching clients, I’m often struck by how critical they are towards themselves. @BreneBrown says when we armour up to protect ourselves during or after challenging situations, we swing between thinking we suck to the other person does. I’ve noticed the pendulum often lands right back at the harsh self-judgment end. In other words, we internalize and then externalize blame, and then back again. And then we ruminate ... In this wonderful interview with psychologist Ethan K...ross, author of Chatter, he explains how shifting to the third person in our heads can help us. I’m writing a book on coaching yourself. Equating who we are with what we do and setting aside most other aspects of life starts messing with us as we age #meaning #purpose #leadership #identity #change #consciousness #coaching #HireYourHigherSelf #transcendence https://hbr.org//finding-direction-when-youre-feeling-lost

Remember the plants, trees, animal life who all have their families, their histories too. Talk to them, listen to them. They are alive poems. JOY HARJO Photo by Peter Wey @peterweyphotography ... Perhaps the world appreciated poetry a little with Amanda Gorman’s amazing performance last week. I love the wild hares who live all around us here on the Canadian Prairies. It feels like minus 30 C here today, which is better for them than yesterday’s minus 37. The same hare shows up on the snow outside my window most mornings to stare at me. Sometimes he has a buddy with him. I love their poetry. @amandasgorman #poems #poetry #AmandaGorman #animals #nature #snow #soul #plants #trees #stillness #snow #hares #rabbits #awe #consciousness #peace

I prefer winter and Fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn't show. ~ Andrew Wyeth Image by Paolo De Faveri @paolodefaverilandscapes ... I love spring and summer best because of my garden passion, but there is something contemplative about fall and winter. I love the pure white of snow and how it sparkles, and the hoar frost, which looks like magic. And I love the coziness inside if we are lucky enough to have a haven that is safe with our partners. We will be cocooning with COVID spiking ... lots of reading and baking and movies. I love having lots of time to think and be. Stay safe, everyone. #GardenofPensiveness #quotes #wyeth #fall #winter #pensive #consciousness #awareness #pure #snow #nature #cocooning

As an executive coach, I hear many leaders complain about how their employees don’t take feedback or criticism well. When I ask if the leader has ever asked for feedback on how they could improve their impact on employees, or if the leader has shared what is hard for them, the answer is usually no. It takes vulnerability to open oneself up to criticism. Most of us avoid feeling vulnerable, and yet it’s invaluable for self-awareness and connection - skills that enable really hard conversations. The Dare to Lead curriculum is full of practical ways to enhance your leadership - whether you have direct reports or not. I’m teaching this great program in Saskatoon in February. https://www.edwards.usask.ca//programs/L/dare-to-lead.aspx

My religion is nature. That’s what arouses those feelings of wonder and mysticism and gratitude in me. OLIVER SACKS Photo of snow weasel by Raven Minn... My father used to say Nature is my church. He took us on long wilderness canoe treks in northern Quebec and Ontario and cross country skiing all winter. He tended a huge garden. He has been physically gone for five years, but his soul is in my soul, and I find spirit outside, always. #nature #spirituality #quotes #oliversacks #wildanimals #flowers #trees #forestbathing #consciousness #awareness #pure

One of my favourite books on productivity (a major interest of mine) is Essentialism, by Greg McKeown. He has a newsletter that you can read in one minute. This is what he sent this week: Uncommit. Dear Essentialists,... Have you ever had a dream that outlived its usefulness? Have you ever continued to invest time or effort in a nonessential project instead of cutting your loses? Have you ever continued to pour money into an investment that wasn't panning out instead of walking away? Ever been stuck in a cycle of "throwing good money after bad"? An Essentialist has the courage to uncommit, no matter the sunk costs (see Ch.12 of Essentialism for more on this). My guest on this week's epsiode of the What's Essential podcast, followed her dream to live and travel in Germany. Now she wants to leave but is worried about giving up her dream. This conversation, as you'll see, took a suprising turn. Listen and subscribe here. Here's how to apply this today: 1) Think of a goal or a dream that has outlived it's usefulness (20 seconds) 2) Ask, "If I weren't already invested in this project, how much would I invest in it now?" (20 seconds) 3) Explore, "What else could I do with this time or money if I pulled the plug now?" (20 seconds). That's a minute that could result in a big time-rebate. https://link.chtbl.com/Kt_Q23jx

The plants are teachers. They are connected to each other, and all other spiritual beings through the sacredness of life. When I remember who I am a human being connected to all of life I remember also that I am loved by the spirit world and our ancestors. And when I remember this, I remember to respect even the smallest of things. Our Lives are in the Land Artist Christi Belcourt @christi_belcourt ... "Fearless introspection" is required to be a better leader. Tools help, but it's focusing on self-awareness and the impact of your behaviours that shifts results.
