Most of my reading lately has been mentioning "antecedent arrangements" for success in dog behaviours. Meaning switch up the environment to help the dog be successful with what you are asking of them. Tonight we did just that and rearranged my living room furniture to help Cricket be successful with what I was asking of her. I wanted to have her comfortably step backwards onto a higher surface. We started with just a slightly higher surface with some books I used. Cricket kep...t moving her back end to go sideways so we made a smaller area for her to move in and by doing this she was going backwards in a much straighter line. With small backwards steps and praising her for touching the books with her back paws to start and then rewarding her for one back paw on the books and then finally we accomplished our goal of having her back up with putting both back paws on the raised surface. *sorry for poor picture quality*

This is a very short video on calming signals (a few of them). This video was taken yesterday morning when my nephews stayed the night. As you can see, even tho...ugh my dog Lou has grown up with the children from a puppy, he still displays calming signals when they get to close. These are the signs people are missing when they post 'cute' pictures of their children and dogs. I allowed the video to happen for video footage of the signals to share, and the situation was under control and I took Sam away within a few seconds of recording. A dog that was scared or less tolerant could easily snap at the child if he signs were ignored. See more
