Coastal Action 13.01.2021

Our Climate Change Team is thrilled to collaborate with Barry Stevens of 3D Wave Design and the Town of Lunenburg to produce a public, interactive flood map for the Town of Lunenburg and the community of Blue Rocks. This innovative map is designed to help these communities adapt to the effects of climate change, such as sea-level rise and increased flooding from storm surge. The map features a 3D model of both communities, animated sea-level rise and flood scenarios, a...djustable features such as storm surge and tide levels, emergency preparation resources, and information about coastal management methods. Get a sneak peak of the map here: https://bit.ly/3bjXYqM & keep your eyes on this space for updates! For more info, contact [email protected]. We would like to thank RBC Foundation for supporting this project through the Tech for Nature program and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.

Coastal Action staff attended the 2020 Virtual Fall Meeting of the Nova Scotia Invasive Species Council. We collaborated with partners across the province to brainstorm ways to raise awareness about invasive species, and create action to prevent their spread and impact on native and endangered species. This video is from our Species at Risk & Biodiversity Team and highlights some of the ways Coastal Action works to protect the endangered Atlantic Whitefish from invasive fish species. For more information on the project, visit our website: https://bit.ly/2xydptB or contact Molly at [email protected]. Full video transcript here: https://bit.ly/399ENif

We’re highlighting one of our project partners, RBC Foundation! With support from RBC Tech for Nature, our Climate Change Team developed an innovative, interactive flood-map for the Town of Lunenburg. This map will help coastal communities along Nova Scotia’s South Shore adapt to the effects of climate change & improve planning around coastal stresses such as sea-level rise and increased storm surge. Our team also worked with two small-scale farms this summer. With RBC ...Foundation’s support, we helped these farms transform 22,200 m of under-utilized land into productive perennial cropping and silvopasture systems, as well as plant over 1,552 trees and shrubs! The project aims to increase crop diversity, sequester carbon, support wildlife, and strengthen adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards. Virtual tours of the participating farms can be found on our YouTube channel: Soil Mates Farm: https://youtu.be/PTlQD_dtCD8 Newbury Hill Farm: https://youtu.be/Qs6dNzBi7YQ

The Bluenose Academy Trailblazers had a great time playing in the snow a few weeks ago! Trailblazers is a fun, entirely outdoor program with the goals of increasing physical activity, inspiring connection to nature throughout the seasons, and developing outdoor and leadership skills. We play fun, cooperative games and do adventurous activities throughout the woods surrounding the school. The program runs in almost all types of weather, even unexpected snow in the first week of November! Our fall Trailblazers sessions are full but you can contact [email protected] for more information or to be added to our environmental education email list!

In 2020 Coastal Action partnered with the RBC Foundation, Soil Mates Farm, and Newbury Hill Farm to transform underutilized pasture into productive agricultural land, featuring perennial cropping and silvopasture systems. The project aims to plant woody perennials and trees across farmland to increase crop diversity, sequester carbon, support wildlife, and strengthen adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards. This year we supported two small-scale agricultural business...es in the implementation of perennial and silvopasture systems, planting a total of 1,552 woody perennials and trees across two agricultural sites! This video showcases Newbury Hill Farm, the type of system they installed, their installation process, and some of the project successes. Know a farmer who is interested in perennial cropping systems and/or silvopasture? Email us at [email protected] .
