Planting is tiring work. Good thing we had hardworking Green Ribbon Champion volunteers to plant 1600 Marram Grasses this year! This will help build healthier dune systems along Lake Huron.

All you need to start a nature journal is something to make a mark with and something to make a mark on. Coastal Conservation Youth Corps 2020 participants naturally used sketching as they learned about species ID in Goderich's Maitland Woods. #CCYC #naturejournal

Have you seen this seedling sprouting in our coastal forests? In time the leaves will grow and change shape as the more familiar form of Common Buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica) evolves. This fall the Coastal Conservation Youth Corps #CCYC selected a patch in the Maitland Woods where they removed young seedlings of this invasive species - roots and all. Manual removal is not successful if stems are broken, or roots remain in the ground. Get them while they're young and before the ground is frozen to make way for native woodland species.

While studying vegetation and forest composition in Maitland woods, young naturalists from the Coastal Conservation Youth Corps discovered these galls on Sumac sp. trees. With research, we suspect they are the Sumac gall aphid (Melaphis rhois). Amazing for such a tiny insect to create a large and strikingly coloured formation. As part of the fascinating life cycle, the females drop to overwinter in moss beneath the tree. #CCYC

Along many parts of the Lake Huron coastline, particularly north of Point Clark (including southern Georgian Bay and the south shore of Manitoulin Is.), beach and dunes are considered geologic relicssand deposits which were deposited centuries ago when the coastal geologic conditions were much different than today. The beach and dunes should be regarded as a non-renewable resource that must be conserved in order to maintain this natural resource. #didyouknow #themoreyouknow #education #lakehuron #beach #dune # grooming #sensitivearea #sustainability #ecosystem

Plants like American beachgrass are essential to dune health. The roots of the plants act as a net to hold the dune together. When wind blows sand across the beach and dunes, the sand hits the plants and collects around the base. Without these plants, there would be no dunes, which provide resources to a surprising array of animals. #beachgrass #lakehuron #sandbeach #dune #education #roots #erosion #restoration #themoreyouknow #ecosystem #health

Covid-19 has changed our lifestyle and many of us have been hiking trails more to enjoy time away from home. A kind reminder from mother nature to leave trails cleaner than you found them. Would you like to guess how many #nurdles the #CoastalConservationYouthCorps volunteers sifted out the sand as part of their Shoreline Cleanup and microplastics study? Post your estimate and we'll let you know who's closest.... yes, we actually counted them! #CCYC #GreatCanadianShorelineCleanup

Dune fencing reduces wind speed across the sand surface and encourages foredune deposition. They also act as a minor barrier to wave attacks, reducing the erosion potential of waves. #themoreyouknow #education #lakehuron #restoration #beach #dune #dunefencing #sustainability #sensitivearea #ecosystem #sand

Go panning for Nurdles! This little white plastic pellet, a ‘nurdle’ is how plastic is shipped before it is made into a product. Sadly they find their way onto our beaches before this happens, thus polluting our land & lakes. Throw out any you find to keep our sand plastic free. Thanks, Liz #CCYC for this post.
