Chase Iron Eyes, lead counsel for the Lakota People’s Law Project, will deliver a special invocation, a reminder that the civil rights struggle is interwoven among people of color, including Indigenous communities. "Sunday marks the 56th anniversary of those marches and Bloody Sunday, when more than 500 demonstrators gathered on March 7, 1965, to demand the right to vote and cross Selma’s Edmund Pettus Bridge. They were met by dozens of state troopers and many were severely... beaten. The attack, broadcast on national television, captured the attention of millions and became a symbol of the brutal racism Black Americans endured across the South. Two weeks later, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and thousands of civil rights protesters marched the 49 miles from Selma to the state capital, Montgomery an event that prompted Congress to eventually pass the Voting Rights Act of 1965." https://indiancountrytoday.com//selma-bridge-crossing-jubi

Dozens of people are at 245 E Cordova, blocking the port entrance and demanding Indigenous Water Protector Stacy Gallagher be released and charges be dropped, after being arrested for conducting ceremony and peaceful prayer at Burnaby Mountain. There is a heavy police presence around the big circle or protectors. The protectors vow to stay there until Stacy is released.

UPDATE ON STACY GALLAGHER Stacy’s hearing today was a success. There are bureaucratic papers to be filled out, but barring any unforeseen circumstances, he sho...uld be returned to us later today. So grateful our Uncle will be released from colonial court systems that strive to criminalize Indigenous peoples who stand in opposition to dangerous resource extraction projects on our lands at the hands of the Crown. Stacy is one of the kindest, most generous and devoted land defenders in our community. And his dedication to love of the land and his community is unparalleled. This fight is long from over though. TMX continues construction each day, and we must continue to engage in direct action against these dangerous resource extraction projects that threaten our collective future. And we must continue to stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples fighting criminalized by the colonial court systems for defending their lands. The sacred fire that burns at the Clark and Hastings Port blockade will continue until we have confirmation of his safety and release. Continue to come down to Clark and Hastings to support the youth holding it down here and to share medicines with the fire for our Uncle, and fellow land defender, Stacy Gallagher as he heals from the violence of the colonial court. Huy chexw for all the support!

Fred Sasakamoose was barely out his teens when he took face-offs against Maurice Richard and played against Gordie Howe as a centre for the Chicago Blackhawks in 1954. His path to becoming one of the first Indigenous players in the National Hockey League was all the more remarkable for having survived the trauma and abuse of a residential school. While his career in the NHL lasted only 11 games, he blazed a trail for future generations of Indigenous players.... Mr. Sasakamoose would later go on to become chief of his First Nation and served his community for decades. Years after he played hockey, people slowly resurrected him and propped him up on stage, said his son, Neil. He had a story to tell. He could move you through words. That was his gift. Mr. Sasakamoose died Tuesday afternoon in a Saskatchewan hospital from complications of COVID-19. He was 86.

A new report from the Canada Energy Regulator projects that if Canada strengthens its climate policies to cut more greenhouse-gas emissions, neither the Trans Mountain expansion nor the new Keystone XL pipeline will be needed. Environment groups are hailing the report as evidence supporting their long-held view that the expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline from Edmonton to Burnaby, B.C., should be stopped immediately. READ MORE: Trans Mountain pipeline expansion on schedu...le, on budget: CEO Cam Fenton, Canada team lead at 350.org (named for a safe level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere) pointed out the federal government’s own regulator twice recommended the government approve the Trans Mountain expansion, but is now projecting that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s own actions on climate could make the pipeline he bought unnecessary. The Canadian Energy Regulator’s new report makes it clear that if Canada acts on the climate crisis, even at a level far below what was promised in last week’s net-zero legislation, both the Trans Mountain and Keystone XL pipelines aren’t necessary, said Fenton.

Tom Gunton, a resource and environmental planning professor at Simon Fraser University, said since the government itself just introduced legislation that enshrines more aggressive climate action into law, it's pretty clear more climate policies are coming. And he points out the report is clear that its own "evolving scenario" of more ambitious climate action doesn't go far enough to see Canada hit zero net emissions by 2050. Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson tabled legi...slation last week to set that as the goal. "Net-zero" means either no emissions are produced, or any that are produced are absorbed by nature or technology so no more are added to the atmosphere, where they contribute to global warming. Gunton said "under the most likely scenario you're not going to need these pipelines, so you should at least defer or shelve construction." He said if the projections change, they can be revisited but at the moment we could be spending more than $22 billion to build pipelines that aren't needed.

Bombshell CER report just nailed the Trudeau government's internal contradiction on climate and building pipelines. "The annual Energy Futures report from the Canada Energy Regulator issued Tuesday projects Canada’s energy supply and production over the next 30 years. It concludes that all three pipelines under construction will be needed only if no more climate policies are implemented after this year."

Reminder from January: "The UN Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) has ordered Canada to halt construction on the pipeline unless officials obtain informed consent from impacted Indigenous peoples, saying the projects would cause irreparable harm to indigenous peoples rights, culture, lands, territories and way of life. Fifty percent of the proposed route for the Trans Mountain Pipeline is on Secwepemc territory. We have un-ceded land, which means... we have never signed treaties with the federal government, Kanahus Manuel, one of the Indigenous activists who brought the human rights violations to the UN CERD’s attention, told Earther. We’ve never signed our land away, we have rights to it ... so self-determination for our people must be respected. Manuel is a member of the Tiny House Warriors, who are fighting to stop the pipeline’s construction by building their homes along Secwepemc land which it crosses. In October, she was violently arrested for defying an eviction order, leaving her with a broken wrist. The UN committee said Manuel’s arrest and detainment alarmed them, and that they were disturbed by the forced removal, disproportionate use of force, harassment and intimidation by law enforcement officials against indigenous peoples who peacefully oppose large-scale development projects on their traditional territories.

"Hi my name is Red Deer and I’m from the Nlaka’pamux nation. I’m blocking the logging that has been planned for Falls Lake Road on our unceded Territory for the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion. The trees here are much taller than in other areas and there are many species. There’s a beautiful creek nearby, and this is definitely grizzly bear habitat. Today I stand up to protect my territory, and my relatives, the trees, the grizzly, all the other wildlife, the medicines, the air and the water. I stand in support with all other Land Defenders. I uphold all life. All life is sacred. I continue to pray that people do whatever they have to do to stop this terrible Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. All My Relations"

Peter McCartney, a campaign organizer for the Wilderness Committee is among those keeping an eye on statements Trans Mountain has made in its filings to the Canada Energy Regulator, compared with its construction schedule. Groups have observed that clearing work did not start in a few key spots of a segment of the project known as Spread 7, the final 35-kilometre section between Langley and its Burnaby Mountain Terminal during a key time window that is least risk to fish in s...tream habitat areas. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Article content continued That period is Aug. 1 to Sept. 15, and in an affidavit to its application for an expedited approval of its routing, company vice-president David Safaris said that if substantial construction progress isn’t made in 2020, it could lead to a material risk that its service date would be delayed by months to even a year. And environmental groups are betting that eventuality is what is unfolding. We’ve been saying over and over again all year, this company is delayed, McCartney said, which is a financial risk to Canadians since taxpayers are ultimately backstopping what is now a Crown corporation.
