Timing is everything! @coastrestore crews have been keeping an eye on this derelict outpost for the past few years. With another long winter storm season approaching @tribal.parks.allies and CRS field techs made the call to remove nearly three tons of trash and hazardous materials that had been illegally stored and abandoned at the site. Less than a week later a massive storm pummeled the coast and succeeded in partially sinking the infrastructure. Removing the loose debris in the nick of time saved thousands of pounds of pollution and hazardous materials from dispersing into the local marine environment. Next step is to remove the derelict building and infrastructure from the marine environment forever. #restoretheshore #coastrestore

No international source to blame for all of the trash coming out of our local waters this winter season. Domestic sources of marine pollution are a real problem here in Canada. The @coastrestore team collects another load from #tofino waterways this winter. #restoretheshore #coastrestore

It’s wet, cold and dirty work but the @coastrestore team endures the hardships to keep these derelict vessel removals going all winter long.

One of the worst materials to have ever made its way into our worlds coastal ecosystems - polystyrene (aka styrofoam) flotation. These giant pieces of flotation are manufactured with millions of tiny foam nurdles that inundate the marine environment. Fish and wildlife of all forms mistake the tiny pellets for food and ingest them. Small fish like baby salmon eat so much during their outmigration that they clog up their digestive tracts with styrofoam and perish from starva...tion. But that’s not all of the hazards these materials hide, the flame retardant chemicals injected into these floats are also lethal toxins and bioaccumulate in all forms of wildlife, including humans. Removing this pollution as quickly as possible is one of the main goals of the @coastrestore team. Please report any sightings through the reporting line on our website. #restoretheshore #coastrestore See more

Did you know that @coastrestore projects operate on both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts? In addition to the habitat rehabilitation work that we perform Coastal Restoration Society helps to support Indigenous and Canadian fishermen by studying traditional and emerging fisheries. Our large pelagic studies will help fishermen across Canada access new fisheries as we move towards a future effected by climate change. @coastrestore crews in Atlantic Canada have produced groundbreaking results in large pelagic tagging studies that will open up new opportunities for fishermen struggling to survive as more traditional catches continue to decline. To learn more about these exciting studies visit us online! #pelagiccanada #coastrestore
